Perfect example: darksouls
A great game that started small, and blew up. This game was heralded for years, and now all of a sudden it gets a massive dump taken on it because it's become a mainstream game in its own right.
While I agree that drakes4 isnt some amazing graphical achievement. The story telling, ganeplay, and scenery are way above par. Easily a 9/10 game. If it were a movie "raiders of the lost ark" it would break the box office.

Given the fact that the game is 90% story based. It only makes sense that it is linear and on rail. I wish it was sandboxed, but unfortunately, cinematic storytelling and open world can't exist in tandum in gaming.
The gunplay was lacking, a lot. That's the real gripe that I have with it.
Eh it's a decent game. Aside from the shit stealth and shit multiplayer the gameplay is quite fun as long as you're playing on crushing. The AI surprises me at times.
The plot is very simplistic and fine for the most part, although Elena's reason to be mad at Drake is incredibly stupid.
The cast as always is very likeable. And i want to be raped by that nigress.

It's actually not the worst offender on the "failed movie director, now game developer" scale. At least it has playable though linear parts. But for me all those recent Naughty Dog titles are 6/6,5 at best, and with best I mean U2, not TLoU, that was one boring "game".

I Could never get into games like Uncharted, TLoU, Heavy Rain etc where the drive of progression is forced primarily by a plot you may or may not give a shit about. It isn't like mario or crash or something where say, the gameplay itself is the drive of the game, or the souls series where the drive is whatever the fuck you want it to be. Rather, these games seem to make you want to play for the story, like it is the only reason you're playing it, and I find that gay. The gameplay of all those titles is forgettable and to be honest so are their plots.
But they seem to be popular, which says a lot about the game industry as a whole.

Any effort that went into making the game more cinematic or narrative focused could have been spent increasing replayability or simply making the game better.
Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are two of my favorite games of all time. They have great set pieces, are well polished, good shooting and climbing mechanics, funny dialogue/characters, and overall are just FUN experiences. They let you fight (i.e. play the game) almost constantly, and only interrupt with a few 3 or 4 minute cutscenes, and the occasional big set piece fight (but usually combine with lots of shooting/fighting during the setpiece).
The issue with Uncharted 4 is much the issue with the fourth Indiana Jones movie- nobody really cares about Nathan Drake, or Indiana Jones. They're humorous, fun characters, but one dimensional at best. When you try to make a gripping, emotionally driven story like Last of Us out of one dimensional characters, it just doesn't work. The Last of Us works because 1. you don't have the first two hours of the game being cutscenes. The first hour is mostly scripted sequences but it serves as a good tutorial. After that, cutscenes only occur to tell story, giving you plenty of time in between to actually play the game. Characters were built with dialogue along the way, during gameplay, instead of forcing you to watch hours of cutscenes (even when the cutscenes were longer, we actually care about the characters more than because we recognize them and have played as them).
The gameplay mechanics are improved and awesome in Uncharted 4- unfortunately, there's not as much gameplay as in the first 3 games, or The Last of Us.
Uncharted 4 is not a bad game- it's just that it won't let you play the awesome gem of a game hidden underneath the constant 100% linear sections/cutscenes full of characters we have no reason to care about since they're just caricatures as opposed to real people like we see in Last of Us.
