The manga is the source material and infinitely better than the anime. I'd argue that it's one of the best sci-fi battle manga ever made (bar the rushed ending), which is no easy feat. At least up to Last Order. Don't read Last Order.
It was also almost certainly a partial inspiration for the likes of Revengeance, if that makes it seem anymore interesting.

I usually expect interesting fashion and crazy eyewear, impossible architecture, bright colors contrasting with dark environments and lots and lots of cable porn. It seems the signature story elements of cyberpunk media have pretty much died out though.
