And then Cataclysm happened and everything went to shit.
Seriously WC1 to WotLK was solid campy but then it just shat all over the IP.
It was alright, but the reason people liked it so much is that it was well told and had a lot of likeable characters. This was before Metzen switched his art pen to a writer's one.

It was always a lighter kid friendlier version of Warhammer.
But it had a teenage edge about it that gave it some charm. But that's all gone now.

Writer-Metzen was still fine early on.
Those pre-WC3 novels he wrote and WC3 as well had him as writer already and they turned out fine.
The writing didn't really become irredeemable plothole shit until Cataclysm.
WoW also didn't start suffering from massive cut content until the Acticision buyout.
I'm still fucking salty about Azjol Nerub zone being cut from WotLK and some of the raids (Utgarde and Gundrak) being relegated into dungeons instead.
Utgarde and Gundrak were supposed to be starter raids (with both Utgarde parts being 1 in the raid version) but Activision wanted more dungeons and casualization so they got changed into dungeons instead.
Azjol Nerub was supposed to be a zone but got cut due to Activision wanting to release WotLK early (even though majority of the playerbase DID NOT clear out Sunwell and in fact only a handful, literally, of guilds got past Muru the Guildbreaker) and it was supposed to have a raid where you kill Anubarak. Instead we got 2 shitty dungeons instead with Anubarak dying in a 5-man.
Still, other than raids being rebalanced into dungeons, basically the only cut content is Azjol Nerub zone which isn't a gigantic loss but still shows Activision's cancerous grasp.
And then Cataclysm had a fuckton of its promised shit cut and later expansions (MoP and WoD) are even worse in cut content department, ESPECIALLY WoD.

there were several pieces that were pretty damn good to be gotten from badges. some trinkets from heroic dungeons lasted well into raids. kazzak and doomwalker loot had a few shining pieces in them as well, not to mention the tailored set that lasted caster dps until Tier 6.

this may come as a shock to you, but maybe only 4 to 5 people per server EVER had perfect BiS everything, even the hardcore raiders.
back before your time, you know, free tier gear, tier tokens, key trinkets and weapons didn't always drop. for example, my guild had 24 illidan kills and we got exactly 1 cursed vision and no warglaives. i had to do arena to get an offhand that wasn't from a heroic dungeon, as the only good fast sword came from mother sharaz. and mother was behind the meat gate in gurtogg bloodboil and the the shadow resist gear grind
