Mercy is so underrated in a fight. Her blaster deals great damage quickly and is pinpoint accurate if you can deal with the slow projectile speed. I don't know the exact damage numbers but it feels much better than Lucio's wub-wub gun. She has a small frame with a neutral colour scheme and her blaster doesn't look very threatening, which I think helps her avoid getting focused down during fights.
I regularly get 5-7 elimination streaks and often more with her. Guardian Angel is as good as an escape as it is for keeping up with healing. She can get right up in Hanzo or Widowmakers' faces and pew pew them to death in a second. She can bait out Roadhog hooks, and her blaster is great for peeking and picking off turrets or deployed Bastions. Reinhardt will keep his shield pointed at the other, more threatening players, allowing her to circle round and blast his massive head hitbox.
I never use the damage boost beam because I can almost always do more damage with her pistol.

He's both, actually.
His Healing Beacon is definitely his most useful ability, and is great for offensive teams. He can drop a beacon to either extend his own survivability or let wounded team-mates heal up in his wake, or give the support a break, or both.
His weapon is very well rounded and has a solid DPS on top of being pretty accurate at range, and it becomes even more vicious with his auto-locking ult.
Sprint isn't all that great, but it makes it easy for him to keep at the front of his team's offense, or seize opportunities to flank.
All in all he's a fairly forgiving character who's a very conventional FPS Hero that the player doesn't need to learn any tricks to do well with.
