I just want to know why everyone falls for such blatant shitposting. Every video is people either purposefully doing the worst things you can do, or modifying the game to make it look bad.

It's not a bad thing that you can make a character fucking useless at combat.

Or that combat takes more than "left click."

Morrowind's combat isn't great but I can see how some people would find it better than Oblivion and Skyrim's combat.

Playing Elder Scrolls for the combat is like playing Kingdom Hearts for the story though.

The first time I played I accidentally skipped probably 75% of the story quest without even realizing it. I think I left off at Caius Cosades telling me to do shit then 50-60 hours later I stumbled onto the Ashlanders and did their Nerevar quests, talked to Azura (or the other way around), and then finished the game by killing whats his tits. Missed getting corprus and everything. Every time I try to replay it something comes up and I end up forgetting about playing the game.

Morrowind combat wasn't great, but at least it managed to bring the character's skill into the equation, as it should be in an RPG.
>>
>>339136507

why are graphics such a big deal to people?

i mean, i get that pretty graphics can be awesome, and add to a game. but when i play an old game, it's surprising how quickly your eyes adjust to the old graphics. it doesn't take much time. I can easily play games on the N64/PS1 and tolerate, even enjoy how they look and get into it. I am confused when people say that old/outdated graphics make a game unplayable for them.

I just need TWO mods to exist to be able to play this game for more than 10 hours without getting bored:

1. Make towns come alive with NPCs actually doing stuff, most NPCs just sit in one location all day and do nothing. However this would have to not impact gameplay or ruin quests too much. When I play Morrowind I am very aware that no one else except for me actually has a life - even Skyrim did that far better.

2. The graphics overhaul package is amazing but no option to be able to scale the UI back up to manageable levels and reading long ass NPC dialog means I have to lean in to my monitor to read it.

Yes.

Except Fallout 4, which was bad because it doesn't even pretend to be an RPG.

My first TES game was Arena and I hated it. I didn't care much for Daggerfall either, felt it was needlessly complicated.

Morrowind I felt was a nice middle ground between the simplicity of Arena and the convolution of Daggerfall.

morrowind may be miles ahead games on ps1, but games like say future cop LAPD are much more pleasing to the eye than morrowind. Morrowind is plain ugly, it was in 2003 and it sure as hell is now. Shite bait famalam, but here's a real response nonetheless.

Morrowind's combat is all based about the limitations of the system at the time. Without the capabilities to fully display what dynamic combat would be like, they still kept the dice rolling system in order to keep the essence of what the fight should be. It has the flaws of a dice rolling system, such as some encounters going to negative and positive extremes, but overall it's ok.

The reason why people prefer Morrowind's combat system over later Elder Scrolls titles is that it still does a better job painting the encounter. After 9 years, Skyrim showed no real improvement in creating a responsive combat system. It's not surprising, considering that it has been the same engine. Weapons still have canned animations, enemies react only with staggering, and how you actually hit them has no real effect outside of whether or not they're blocking; however, the problem all starts to arise with the fact that Skyrim takes your stats much less into account. It's all boiled down to HP, Magicka, Weapon DMG, and Stamina is reserved only for power attacks and sprinting. Morrowind, despite its flaws, delivers a better combat experience because who your character is overall matters more, while in Skyrim it's only about how many attacks you can do.

It's the same reason people prefer tabletop RPGs over games like Skyrim. It's better to take the occasional flaws that you can change with stats than a shite, mind-numbingly simple system.

What do you mean? I don't hate Oblivion but I thought the opposite. Do you just mean because of the mechanics/engine what you have to do is more varied (ie the final Thieves Guild heist?)? Or setpieces like Whodunit?
>the towns have a more familiar comfy design to them, and I love the music
That's fair enough, even if I thought the opposite because I love the alien-yet-comforting feel of Morrowind
Granted, once I tried Oblivion very heavily-modded only recently, I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot more, but the base game...

>>339147101
>there are plenty to do with quests and guilds trying to fuck with game mechanics
I dunno, it might be a personal-taste thing but I just haven't had any fun replaying Oblivion at all. From trying it when it came out, I finished it really quickly with one character and then just couldn't attempt it again. Like, a whole year? There's no way it could keep me amused for that long.

Morrowind is widely agreed to be good, though. I played it for like 12 hours - cool setting, terrible gameplay. It's not just miss-miss-miss, the melee is just not fun at all and magic is silly OP, so is alchemy. I kinda wish there was a version with combat that didn't suck ass.

Only on /v/ and only when Euroshits are awake. If you honestly think Morrowind is a good (pffff) game, you need to consider putting a bullet through your brain.

It's called skyrim.

Skyrim combat is floaty and repetitive bullshit, and half the time you're scrolling through a menu to select the right spell, and half the time you're doing the hokey pokey with idiot AI that sits still and swipes at you. Except for some areas where you enter a cave and some fuck starts throwing around undodgeable particle effects, causing you to spend 99% of the time in your menu chugging potions before reaching his ass and one-hitting him. Seriously I logged nearly 300 hours in Skyrim and I've gotta say the combat is my least favourite part.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make darknut's gdr and morrowind rebirth 3.6 run along nicely?

So... if I want to use the Morrowind Overhaul, do I have to install the Graphics Extender manually? What about the Script Extender?
Do I install Tamriel Rebuilt before or after the Overhaul?
Pls help

>to a certain extent based on your skills

This totally defeats the purpose of a role-playing game.

An RPG is a game where you play a character who isn't you, and are not only helped by their strengths but constrained by their weaknesses and limitations. You should not be able to get around the fact that you made a character who is shit at combat because you happen to have 10,000 hours playing reflex based games.

If you want to play a game where player skill is paramount, there are plenty available.
>>
>>339154771
Except player skill already plays role in Morrowind as you manually dodge enemy attacks and enemies. If you make a FPP game, make combat look good in FPP, if you want to go full dicerolls make an isometric game, like Fallout. Which is a good game.
>>
Combat aside, how can anyone think that this >>339135075 looks better than this>>339136271? Plastering gaudy textures that look nothing like the original everywhere doesn't make the game better, even if they are higher resulution.

Morrowind in deep
>>
>defend Morrowind's combat
Uhh, no? Even the die hard fans of this game admit it's beyond bad.

No one plays Elder Scrolls for it's gameplay, it's like reading a book for it's musical score.

This post is great. On a less involved level, the sheer amount of interaction between the factions (both background and during quests) is incredible once you start thinking about it.

Just the Overhaul and maybe Tamriel Rebuilt if you want extra content

From the top of my head, this http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/29631/? hlaalu retexture and these http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/22551/? tapestries look better than abomination in OP.

Thanks, but I just meant... more generally?
I reinstalled to play for the first time non-watercoloured in ages and I'm a bit lost as to what to use, someone last thread recommended the Overhaul.
