Dragonfall was an excellent CRPG, In particular the Director's Cut.
Hong Kong was a solid entry that was inferior to Dragonfall in story/choices department but a step up graphical and gameplay wise.
You are also factually wrong about Gender and Race not affecting the game.
Both mechanically and story wise, Race affects the game.

The whole thing was painfully irrelevant to anything. It could have been an interesting hook if the storm kept hitting locations killing everyone but never harming you, or whatever. But since we had Thaos, the storm was redundant. Doing anything with it on top of the whole Saint's War/Hollowborn curse/gods conspiracy clusterfuck would have been too much. I just don't understand, if they did it to get rid of the tutorial companions, why not just let them get fried by the Engwithan machine like the Leaden Key agents instead of pulling something so contrived?

Just look at any given list of 90s cRPGs, at least 75% of them have Dungeons & Dragons on the cover above the title. Hell, practically every Infinity Engine game is based on DnD, and the only major exception to that was Fallout being based on GURPS.
