Is it too late to save Star Fox?
I don't think so. Zero, while not a perfect game, at least showed the fundamentals of what made people love the series in the first place. I think it marks a starting-off point for making the series good again.
They tried to save it. But it failed. There are other Nintendo IPs that deserve more games, leave Star Fox where it belongs.

It got mixed reviews and is selling even worse than Command. No-one but the most delusional of Nintendo defenders would be so bold as to say that Star Fox Zero is anything more than a sidestep at best for the series.

Star Fox 2 never got released so it doesn't count. There's no empirical data by which to measure its popularity since most people never got to play it.
Star Fox 1 may be slow and archaic by modern standards but it was very fast for when it came out. That was one of the things that really helped define it as a game. There certainly weren't any shooters faster than it at the time, because it was the first of its kind.

Developed by Nintendo, Miyamoto was the director or creative producer or whatever, he had the final say so. He pushed the controllers that nobody liked, he probably pushed for it to be another rethread of SF64 as well, Platinum didn't handle the gameplay.
