SMB3 and the NSMB series never clicked with me the same way other platformers do. They feel a bit too basic for me, like they're the generic platformer template others build off of. The levels are really straight forward, the difficulty is really low, the environments are the standard videogame worlds, there's not much in the way of action or exploration, they're pretty linear overall. I just don't see what I can get from them that I can't get from something else, it doesn't have a draw factor.
They're well made games, don't get me wrong, I'd just much rather play the million other platformers out there that have built on the core Mario series' base and gone in more exciting directions.

I've never minded them or had trouble with them. It's definitely not my favorite Mario game (SMB3 is) but SML2 and SML3 are both great games.
SMB3 has more content, more power-ups, isn't as incredibly easy to cheese, doesn't have Yoshi, has a better item management system, is more challenging, doesn't allow you to fly indefinitely over 90% of the levels, and has better level design.

Super Mario World is a spectacular game, but Super Mario Bros. 3 was just a much better, well thought out game in comparison.
