So I've finally gotten a PC for gaming after an entire life of sucking console dick.

Assume I have 0 PC gaming experience, what are the definitive games that I should play? What did I miss out on over the years? I'm not exactly new to PC, but I have this new powerful PC here and i have no idea how to really take advantage of it. I can't think of the games. I have XCOM 2 here but unfortunately I can't be worked up to play it.
Give me the PC Must plays, both old and modern. I have a lot to catch up on.

Do you have a controller OP?

PS4 controller.

Gmod and csgo
>>
>>339059053
Have CSGO already, Gmod looks very unappealing to me. But speaking of which, i never played HL or Portal
>>
>>339058295
Is it worth building a PC or would a steam machine do?
>>
>>339058295
FTL and uh... I guess the old DnD games
Tbh pc gaming is good for multiplats and mobas only
>>
>>339058295
mobas are like crack for some people, go check those out, like dota2 or league of legends
>>
>>339059214
It seems PC gaming is only good for older games or indie games.
>>
Sorry anon but you wasted your money, I was like you a couple years ago. Played ff14, eve, besieged, banished, tf2, and the forest. Then I realized I can't fix computers and now it collects dust

don't bother with new games they all suck
>>
>>339058295
STALKER is a good place to start, mainly due to how its systems just can't be found in console games. Just expect to be confused and getting your ass handed to you early on, it's okay to suck shit at those games at first.
>>
>>339059186
Building a PC is infinitely better in my opinion because you're not just paying for a gaming machine. It's a fucking PC, you get the gaming + everything else a PC can do, which is almost anything you can think of.

Have over 1000 hours on Dota 2.

I'm not new to PC gaming, but i've only recently actually gotten a PC with power to run everything well. So shit like Dota 2, CSGO and whatnot I've played because they were able to run on my portable toaster. With my new found PC power, what games can do justice?

I'm a casual PC gamer but I've noticed every new game could run on a toaster. I've been wanting to build a PC for a while but seeing how cheap the Alienware steam machines are going online including the alpha and I understand it uses a 750ti. It's just since a more powerful Xbox is coming out why should I build a $1000 to play current gen games when I could wait next year and play those same games on physical copy at the same performance. I just like PC gaming for backwards compatibility/emulation. What's your opinion anons?

>>

True though the Alienware models are just mini pcs that are open sourced. I'd never buy a desktop unless it was a good deal. I hate Alienware but there steam machines atleast are interesting.
>>
>>339060962
Ok stalker is on the list, i've heard good things.
>>339060702
Divinity: Original Sin, is it multiplayer? Is it a game I can complete? I do very much welcome single player games.
Amnesia is now also on the list, but I feel like I ruined that because I saw gameplay walkthroughs of it yeaaars ago.
Thinking of that reminded me of SOMA however, so that's on the list.
>>339061103
Legends of grimcock is now on the list.

>>339061607
I would feel bad. But it's a PC m8, I have other uses for it than just gaming.
>>339061658
I've been thinking heavily about this. I had played skyrim when it came out and it got boring so fast. So how much better can it be with mods?
>>
>>339061607
What is the PC meme?
>>
>>339061734
Anything prebuilt is a ripoff anon. I'm telling you, for bang for buck building it yourself is the way to go.
No matter what it is that you want the PC for, build it yourself and you'll never be paying more than you have to (assuming you're not an idiot)
>>
>>339058295
Consoles have better games in general, PC just provides a better experience.
>>
>>339058295
Half-Life, no question.

Yes it's nearly two decades old but it's an essential crash course on what seperates PC shooters from console shooters. It's also just a fun game.
>>
Honestly, the best thing you can do is get a proper arcade stick, MAME and the whatever the latest pack of roms is. 35 gigs or so. Go nuts with that.
>>
>>339061607
>he fell for the be a poorfag meme and doesn't have PC+PS4+Wii U

>>
>>339061747
STALKER is a very good RPG shooter and very unique, pretty much a must play.

Divinity: Original Sin does have a Co-op mode, it is a top down classic RPG and about 100 hours long

SOMA probably isn't as scary as Amnesia, but has a much better story and overall probably is the better game. If you want another good Horror game with a similair playstyle try Alien: Isolation.

Hello,

You seem to have made a mistake when posting. Your post is in violation of global and /v/-specific rules. Inciting "flame wars", specifically "console wars", is an example of the low-quality posting we try to avoid. /v/ posters are video game enthusiasts of all kinds, and that is OK. Many of us own both a video game console AND a gaming PC! Wow!

We look forward to high-quality posting from you in the future!

I've been playing video games my whole life, and I can tell you for a fact that there's something about MOBA's that attract the most try-hard, raging kiddies I've ever seen.

they even make people rage who normally never rage and turn even the most bro players into raging, no-fun-allowed try hards.

fuck moba's and fuck people that play them
>>
>>339061990
PC gamers are the poor anons what are you talking about?
>>
>>339059537

Epic's new MOBA is okay, pretty easy to get into
>>
OP here.

I have a side question. Is there any software what would allow me to play my PC at home remotely?

See, I'm rarely home, so I don't get to enjoy this brand new fancy PC all day err day. I played mostly on my portable toaster, which is now obsolete.
For games that aren't reaction sensitive, like turn based stuff or anything slow, is there a way I could essentially have the game streaming from my home PC to my laptop. So i'll still be playing with the power of the home computer.
This is fine for Turn based shit like civ or XCOM, delays in input and whatnot are irrelevant.

If this is possible, then I am set. On another note, i love city builder/rts. Even though i fucking SUCK at them.

This, anon. If you have the cashmoney, build yourself something and teach yourself some digital skills to go with your game.

Also Quake III
Skyrim and New Vegas w/mods I guess.
all the Total War games, even the shit ones. They have mods too and some are sweet.

You should ignore nearly everything in this thread. People who say "pc is only good in this one specific way" are just clueless. PC games are literally half the history of gaming, and they go way back to the first digital computer game ever made - Spacewar. Which is better than everything else that came out in the next decade, by the way. To be fair the PDP-1 was more of a mainframe than a personal computer, but it was close enough.

The 'quintessential' PC games are probably the ones which rely on PC's unique capabilities. These days that mostly means the input devices, since the new consoles are also PCs, but it also means the freedom of programmers to play around. This led to the development of mostly PC-specific genres. Vehicle simulators - planes, cars, tanks, submarines and so on - often with good AI to fight against. Real-time strategy, Grand strategy, and 4X, which are the most demanding types, are almost exclusively PC. There are some Japanese games such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms on console, but most noteworthy entries such as Total Annihilation are not. The recent Planetary Annihilation is the biggest, most complex RTS game of all time. You should probably start with a classic such as Age of Empires and Civilization. Arena shooters like Quake pretty much require keyboard and mouse to play correctly, and they are kept alive by a community of modders who make new maps and game modes. The largest and best military action games, like ARMA, are also PC only for that reason. Western RPGs and Dungeon RPGs, which I don't want to even begin covering, are also mostly PC. There are great (exclusive!) games in every genre that is normally associated with consoles or arcades, i.e. Scarlet Symphony 2 in the platformer genre. Also PC is the only way to play porno VNs.

Plenty of 'essential' PC games actually got console ports, such as Command and Conquer on PS and Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast, used a mouse add-on to give the proper experience!

Thief 1 and 2, System shock 1 and 2, Half-life and expansions (also They Hunger), Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Fallout 1 and 2, DOOM 1 and 2, Quake, Shadow Warrior (classic), Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood.
Play the Looking Glass games first (Thief's and System Shock's), some of the best games ever made.
>>
>>339062709
I suppose if you had a proper internet connection you could use teamviewer to do stuff with turn based games.
>>
How about instead of asking people what you should like as a sheep would do you just try different games and different genres and stick to the ones you enjoy?
>>
>>339058295
get UT alpha off epic's website. ive been playing a lot of it, really fun. if you play cs go you're going to wish you didn't spend a lot of money on a pc. however cs go is still ok
>>
>>339061983
That was released on consoles :)

>>339062276
Like it or not, they are good games.

Half life, Deus Ex, the older fallouts, Planescape Torment, STALKER, Thief 1&2 are some of the best games ever. Yes, they're old, but where the fuck did you get the idea that modern PC games were any good?

Doom 1 / 2, morrowind + oblivion + skyrim Heavily modded. Fallout new Vegas heavily modded. For simple quick games to waste time on get FTL and don't starve.

As much as it pains me to say... If you have never played LoL or WoW or Dota you need to play all of those as well.

Warcraft 3

You'll spend 30 hours modding Skyrim, 10 hours fixing it and maybe reistalling everything because you fucked something up while installing
And at best you'll play 2 hours before wanting to download some mod because you noticed something you don't like
Then you'll break the game, and this circle repeats ad infinitum

Caesar III/Zeus and Poseidon/Pharaoh and Cleopatra
Command and Conquer games
Starcraft 1
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War

You would need to set up a VPN and remote into your home machine. Not hard to do if you don't mind research and possibly paying for different Internet.

Cities skylines, Warcraft 2 and 3, Starcraft 1 and 2. All civilization games. The list of "building and controling" games on PC is huge.
