If you consider subscriber growth stagnating successful, sure.
One of the major points of Vanilla servers would be that they're progression and would eventually make their way to BC/Wrath. It makes sense for them to start at their original starting point if they're going to adopt a progression model.

TERA and Blade and Soul had considerably more interactive combat, yes, and the monotone solo questing is what people dislike most about WoW.
However, I know that TERA as an MMO lacked content. The reason people are drawn to MMO's and specifically why there are so many vanilla WoW fans is because of the massive community gatherings and organizations. Being part of a 140+ person strong guild that does things and has a schedule that you are a part of gives you a feeling of pressence among an incomprehensively massive playerbase. When your guild is the first to beat a new boss, you were there. When your guild is at the frontline of the new expansion, so are you. Content. Something that current WoW is lacking somehow, but it once had it all.
TERA has very little content. It's actual combat and gameplay is a shy Monster Hunter and has great potential, but even here, TERA is flawed by it's attempt to retain MMO signatures, like massive, constant healing which trivializes the hard hitting mobs and makes dodging attacks- a feature of the game that makes it's combat great- redundant. And of all the things to take from other MMO's, TERA chose the boring grind quests that nobody likes and basically filled the world with them.
No content in an engaging game made un-engaging in the name of legacy. That's TERA. It could have been so much more.

You were saying that WoW's declining popularity was the result of more competition on the market, and not a decline in the over game. It's hard to tell if they would be able to manage both a vanilla server and the up to date one. I don't think that's the main problem though.
I think the main problem is in the fact that there are people, and not a small amount of people Jesus fuck, that want a vanilla server in the first place. The fan server is proof enough that it's not just whining. There were people actively on that shit all the time. It's quite clear that WoW has lost a lot of what made it so great.
Rather than make a vanilla server, they should just make better damn expansions. The problem wouldn't exist then, and if they can get their act straight, they could maybe get old players back in.

I was trying to say that if Bliz kept their act together and kept the vanilla experience in tact, then there wouldn't be any need for a vanilla server. Folks would get what they want, or at least for the most part. Then again, if we're speaking literally and assume it's launch day WoW 1 for 1 that people want, then I'm wrong, because Bliz would have to release a vanilla server for that.

It really doesn't. That's not what the problem is.
The problem is that you can skip huge swathes of it if you want, in addition to there being very little variety in those quests.
All the quests are "kill x of y", "gather x", "interact with x", and occasionally some combination of those three, with the overwhelming majority being killing x of y.
Not just that, while the storyline, lore, and the like are actually fairly decent (except that new starter island), the presentation for it is absolute garbage so most people miss it. It also doesn't help that they kept fucking with the beginning of the game to try and streamline things further.
It also doesn't help that they keep removing content in the name of streamlining.
