I'll admit Alien is a little slow, especially if you watch the director's cut, but it's still a great flick. By having less of a threat, it focuses on building tension around that threat and keeping you guessing at what the alien is capable of. The sequel cannot achieve this at all since the threat was already established by the end of the previous film.
