PS4.5 will output at 4K, will upscale old games to 4K, will stabilize the framerate of older games (if a game struggles, it will stay locked at the original intended framerate), and will be fully backwards compatible with the PS3.

I already own both the PS4 and Xbone and the idea of the Neo and Scorpio is pretty shitty. If the Scorpio 6TFlop shit is true what's the fucking point of even calling it the same generation as the Xbone? The Xbox One wasn't 4x the power of the 360, might as well make it a 9th gen console at that point with backwards compatibility and some forwards compatible 8th gen games. The Xbox 360 did upscaling to 1080i with a hardware upscaler, DVDs get upscaled on Bluray devices, etc. The PS4.5 will upscale released and future PS4 games in 4K.

Upscaling is free on the PS4.5, it's not a patch or anything. It comes straight from the system, Sony will have 2 firmwares on the PS4 now. PS4.5's firmware will activate if the hardware is matched, PS4 vanilla won't use it at all. There is no compatibility mess, dumbasses.

There's three possible scenarios with PS4 neo
1- Devs spend extra time and money ensuring games run at 30fps on PS4 and 60 on Neo, maybe watering down graphics but splitting the fanbase in those who actually care about 60fps and are willing to buy the same console again and those who don't and stick with the normal PS4
2-Devs don't give an absolute shit and games run at the same resolution and framerate (even with PS4Neo "neo" mode that supposedly uses more of the hardware), ensuring fans don't get pissed and buy the games anyway or simply because it's too expensive to optimize the game once more
3- A large part of the fanbase goes nuts and quits playing on PS4 altogether

Friendly reminder that PS4 Neo is only being madr because of AMD's new Polaris architecture and the increase in performance is because it'd be more expensive to scaledown performance on the chips to be on par with the chip in the current PS4.
Performance is slightly less than that of an R9 Fury in early 3D Mark testing on Polaris 10 chips, so we'll see how the chips being manufactured for Neo compare to what will be made for desktop PCs.

I'm pretty sure they were just targeting 4k video output with a sliiiiight bump in power since the R&D cost are negligible at this point. Something people don't remember is that, if the Neo does exist, it's purely on paper and in the Playstation SDK. They haven't even announced it or handed out dev kits yet, there's theoretically nothing stopping them from trying to outplay Microsoft and delaying the release.
This has been honestly an interesting gen so far from a business perspective. 2017 is going to be a big year for the big 3, especially with VR on the horizon. I still don't understand why people are bitching about this though, if anything, this is the natural evolution of mid gen hardware reboots, ala PS2 slim, New 3ds 360 S, etc. We've already been doing this for ages, why not get a little better performance too while we're at it? As long as compatibility isn't broken with the older models, I don't see the problem.

Games are not locked to CPU speed. This is not the 90s. You can increase the clock speeds and games will automatically run with fewer framedrops without needing to patch anything.
