Nearly every hobby has dedicated conventions/expos where fans size each other up to see who REALLY knows their shit and who is just a poseur. Casuals like you two aren't barred from entry, you should just admit that you're surface fans only as to not waste your time or the time of other more dedicated enthusiasts.

Funny thing about the treatment of women at conventions.
I've been going to conventions pretty consistently for almost 10 years now, and I've never once seen someone get hostile with a woman like this about gaming credentials or anything like that.
What I see a lot of though is nerdy guys stalking and/or showering girls with attention. Like the moment they find a girl who bothers to talk to them they get stuck to her like glue even if it's clear she's not interested in them. Though since they're not really confident, they just become yes-men and try to keep the conversation going as long as possible.

I've been to plenty of conventions, and not once have I ever went up to someone and demanded they prove their "gaming creddentials" to me. Know why? The thing is most people see cosplay as an extension of video games/comic book/etc fandom and it really isn't. It's its own thing. It's pretty common to have threads even on /cgl/ of people posting their pictures and asking what characters would fit their look, and there's a good chance they were never a fan of the characters they're cosplaying before someone recommended it to them. The whole appeal of the cosplay/convention scene to them is the craftsmanship in making accurate costumes and the art of portraying fictional characters as accurately as possible. It's not about cosplaying characters that they actually like.
