Can't wait to see your shitty sword break against my glorious plate armor while I crush your head with half swording
>>
I don't get it though.

Why did people in the past wear armor if the swords still kept doing horrible shit to the wearer? Wear armor, move clunkier than the terminator and then get stabbed with no problem by some dickfaced opponent knight

Then bullets appeared and people finally realized how horribly obsolete armors really are against weapons, and gave up on using them.

Can't even fucking defend properly against iron/steel-tiped arrows baka

Swords couldn't penetrate a knight's full armour unless you stabbed them with a reasonably pointed style of sword

They could slice down the hordes of dirty commoners in gambesons and leather jackets for armour

It really is a fucking stupid matchup. The Knights are way the fuck past both the vikings and samurai technologically. It's purely rule of cool horse shit and it irritates my autism.

Having it be like Crusaders vs Mongols or some other cool shit would have been great. Something contemporary. Samurai were outfitted to fight other Samurai, and not much else. Isolated Japan had some weird metagame going on there. Vikings didn't have anything like plate and their steel is vastly inferior.

Because they fucking didn't. A sword does nothing to armour unless you hit the joints. The goal will always, in a fight, to not be hit in the first place regardless. Using FULL plate armour makes you into a walking tank. The weaknesses are the eyeslits, the joints and whatnot. This is what resulted in the halfswording fedorables shit for more flexibility with the sword. Inb4 some twat talks about le mordschlag xDDD

Katana were a status symbol. Extreme bullshit had to be gone through to make them, and only certain social castes were allowed to touch them. They were the absolute symbol of the men who carried them. That's why their iconography survived, as well as the techniques to use them.

Also, people tend to forget that these things were likely to be used unarmored, on someone else who's unarmored. It's all about the draw cuts. There was a huge arsenal of traditional weapons in Japan, just like Europe. They had spears, bows, clubs, hooks on poles, all the same kinds of shit that Europe had. Katana just get so debated about because their symbolism survived due to the reverence that Jap culture placed on it.

it made it significantly harder for another person with a sword to kill you because them slashing/bashing at you with the blade of the sword wouldn't be as effective.the answer was that they'd attempt to stab eachother through the creases in the armor like the visor.

although getting bashed in a suit of armor would send vibrations through your armor and eventually knock the wind out of you. especially half-swording and taking blunt force to your helmet

>Hagakure was created

But the Hagakure was just a bunch of conversations between a master and retainer recorded over years, and 90% of it didn't even make it into the released translation because it's about mundane, bean-counting shit like the weather, trade, how crops are doing, ect. The philosophical bits were cherrypicked out of the translation. The full work is much, much fucking longer and more boring.

Why people think it was some kind of code of conduct that everyone carried around with them, I don't fucking understand. I guess it's just fun to shitpost when you don't know what you're talking about.

Also, the warrior class in every culture did the same shit. The Seven Samurai has a whole scene of a dude venting about how Samurai are complete pieces of shit and how helpless farmers feel trying to live their lives when these fuckers could ride up and do whatever they want at any given time. Japan knows that they were fucking dicks. Yet they still romanticize the ideal of their philosophy just like we idealize knights and cowboys in the west, even though the vast majority of these groups were likely god awful people.

Op here is what you're forgetting. While samurai swords were slashing weapons there are incredibly heavy and would work just as well as a blunt object. It doesn't matter if armor stops the blade, it's still going to cause concussions and break bones.

Not to mention SWORDS were not the primary weapon of japanese soldiers.

>>338850758
>what is dragonscale ceramic plated level 3a bulletproof armor

The thing about modern day armor is it's incredibly fucking heavy even compared to full plate armor. A modern day soldier can wear it, but only for little bits at a time. As in, ride into the battlefield, do their objective, ride out. Armor isn't going to be worth the effort in a full blown scale war like ww2 where troops marched hundreds of miles and held thin lines for months at a time.

Fatigue and passing out from a heat stroke don't exactly make a soldier combat effective.

As someone who played the Beta, Samurai are hugely overpowered. They have poison darts that rip through health, and poison swords that do as well and they're faster than anyone else. They are seriously overpowered and their poison needs a nerf by the time the game comes out.
>>
>>338858108
It protects your body, I'd rather have that than anything. It's not as heavy as you think and it's not a LITERAL tank.
>>
>>338858278
Wrong, samurai swords were too brittle to be used as clubs. It's true that modern day forging techniques would probably allow you to make a sword that mimics the feel of a katana while enabling techniques like half swording due to better materials, but that defeats the point of the samurai vs knight argument.

Yup, Kenjutsu is full of perfectly valid techniques, and it likely would have looked just as brutal and meaty as HEMA in actual practice on the battlefield.

But Japs have sticks up their asses about actually practicing arts. It's all about repeating form a million times and having good stance, discipline, and spirit. All of which are important to the preservation of the art, but they seem to not give a shit about the whole, you know, "doing it" aspect.

Yeah no shit katanas would have been garbage against European knights, they were used in a different part of the world for a different purpose. IIRC in battle they were used as a last ditch effort, like a soldier's knife. You would be using a much longer weapon or a bow most of the time and would not want someone that close to you. Also this may trigger weebs but a huge plus is how fucking easy the swords are to use. Very low skill floor and can cut as you draw. Would it have stood a chance against the ol' sword n' board? No. But it's neat as fuck and peasants were scared shitless of them

So speaking as someone who has researched the subject of Medieval and Renaissance armor and arms I was intrigued to see this thread on 4chan and in a video game forum to boot....which is very, very cool....I'll one of the questions posed earlier: "Why did people in the past wear armor if the swords still kept doing horrible shit to the wearer?"... the answer is that the design of armor over time evolved to meet the ever advancing weapon technology of the time....different weapons caused armorers to create new types of armor to protect knights and soldiers better...armor became more and more utilitarian and easily mass produced by the 16th and 17th Century and did in fact protect against guns more or less (not so much cannons though)...interesting fact is that the military use of armor has really never went away...our military still use it...one of the classic examples would be the iconic U.S. Army infantry helmet from the Second World War...the United States Army went to the historians and curators of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Arms and Armor and asked them to design a helmet that would stop bullets from the the current weapons of the day...the experts based the infantry helmet on the Sallet, a type of medieval helmet.

Yup. The Katana was not much of a battlefield weapon. It's actual role, besides status symbol, was kind of an sidearm. Carry it around town, use it to settle disputes, super-fast draw-cuts, ect. When you're all armored up and mounted, it doesn't have much of a role at all. They had plenty of other weapons for actual war.

Don't be an idiot, this "myth" is just as bad as the "CUT THROUGH ANYTHING" bullshit.

Japanese blades were hardened and especially thick compared to western swords. Hitting an armored soldier isn't exactly GOOD for the sword but it's not going to break.

Samurai dueling after their who clan war shit changed dramatically during peace time. This is where all the "japanese honor" bullshit came into being from all these bored as fuck philosophers, poets, and writers decided to make it all up. One of which being that the katana was not a parrying sword and the shouldn't touch in combat.

You can punch through plate with a tipped point but the problem is getting enough force, AND doing it a good angle. In a fight, the chance of getting a perfect cut or stab isn't as high as when practicing on, you know, dead pigs and shit. But there's never just plate. There's leather too, and then there's padding and clothing and shit.

I know. The meme that they weren't dangerous weapons is exactly that, a meme. They were no fucking joke if it came down to a bunch of assholes in Kimonos stirring up shit, you didn't want to fuck with the trained man with a weapon.

There was some douchebag mentioned in the Hagakure who had his wallet stolen in town. He drew his katana and chopped down 10 fucking peasants that were in his general area to make sure he got the thief, because he didn't know who took it. This took place in about 20 seconds. Peasants were scared shitless of them for a reason.

>>338859586
Train, train, train. People seem to dislike factoring training into these sorts of things. You have to build the endurance up so that when the time comes, you have it. In my experience (medieval fencing and kendo) this is somehow true, but people who practice medieval fencing are a bunch of lard-asses who can't run a mile without having a heart attack while kendokas (the ones that participate at internacional tournaments) despide weebs and neckbeards, and kick 'em out of dojos just by forcing them to train like normal people.

>Armor isn't going to be worth the effort in a full blown scale war like ww2 where troops marched hundreds of miles and held thin lines for months at a time.
But that's not how a modern war would be fought.
>>
>>338859785
>The armor makes very little difference, most humans can only last 10 or 15 min
You realize the battle starts way way way before actual fighting though right?

The logistics of the armor is a nightmare. I don't care how much you train. If you're body heat is trapped inside several layers of cloth, leather, chain and plates once you reach 105 degrees you're passing out.

hence a bunch of knights stuck in mud will have been exhausted before the fighting even starts.

Im not really talking about east vs west just the downfalls of heavy armor. Sure someone can jump around like a tard for a few minutes to show how nimble you CAN be is not realistic. Tell the guy to walk a few miles first and then show how nimble he can be in armor vs out of armor.
>>
>>338859849
The modern representation of what a katana is actually isn't accurate to the battlefield weapons that were actually carried. They were thicker, heavier chunks of steal than a lot of the really fucking pretty art pieces that survived the years. The modern reproductions that are made aren't based off anything that would have seen real war. The steal would still be brittle, but the mass and blade geometry would be different.
>>
>>338860338
But plate was lighter than wearing full armour but chain like the knights in the 12th century. Seriously, people wore armour for a long fucking time. If it was so ineffective as you say, it would not be used.

Noooope. It was legal for Samurai to just kill peasants for not showing proper respect. Knights chased them around on horseback for sport sometimes. Similar shit probably happened in China (did they have a special, iconic warrior class?).

Western Europe from the 11th-15th century really wasn't as awful for peasants as it is often made out. Notable exception during Plague outbreaks though, but if you survived them those were best times to be a peasant. Unprecedented social mobility, high wages, and even bargaining power.

The guy in full armor is going to take way more arrows before going down then the guy in a felt tunic. Sure, one well aimed arrow that strikes straight onto the plate will punch through it but it will deflect or break ones coming in at an angle or from a long distance.

Armor was a thing because it was effective. Not perfect, but a guy in armor lasts longer then a guy without.

>>

Common misconception, plate armour wasn't nearly as cumbersome as we've been lead to believe. If you could afford it and were going to be anywhere near the front line, you wore that shit and would be extremely foolish not to. Not only did it render slashing useless (save for the blunt force applied to you), but it also prevented minor cuts and scrapes that would have been in danger of turning into a nasty infection or something that would have been fairly likely to kill you back then compared to now when we don't even worry about that shit.

Ask any marine how effective they are with their 60 pounds of gear they carry into patrols. It fuckin hinders them greatly and has an incredibly toll on their effectiveness in combat.

knights armor is 50 pounds average, 6 pounds helmet, and probably around 7 pounds for weapons (main weapon + side weapon for parry). Plus underarmor and chainmail beneath that. Plus water and anything else.

It's going to have a huge impact on effectiveness and tired out the wearer much sooner Their movements are going to be "tank like" to preserve stamina and keep their body heat low.

That's because what you're reading are of forums of a bunch of butt hurt euro fags trying to counter the "mirrion fordering" and "cut through anything" weeaboo faggots.

Just two opposite extremes where neither were true.

Why the fuck would the japanese use weapons that would break upon parry? Seriously, just use some critical thinking here and try not to listen to people trying to win an argument.

Japanese blades and bows were great as were western weapons. There's a reason they stayed around for so long.

Just like platemail was good for combat. But I don't care how fucking nimble they are they still carried 70+ pounds of equipment and literally no one is going to be dancing around in that. They are going to tired out and run the risk of literally dying from over exertion.

Armor is though to be "tank like" not because of it's physical articulation but because it's wearer needs to conserve energy. It's like a long distance runner isn't going to be sprinting from the start.

I get why you'd assume that's where I'm getting my information, but that's not the case. I'm not saying they would snap or whatever on a parry, but they were flashy, last ditch weapons on the battlefield and status symbols made to juice peasants and other (relatively) unarmoured opponents on their isolated island as quickly as possible, compared to the longswords made to withstand wear on a front line with continuous use, against opponents who may be rich enough to have plate armour, which is the same reason your point about "tanklike" movement resulting from a need to conserve energy over what could be a lengthy engagement is such a good one. I don't think we're disagreeing about anything at this point, I do think katanas were also very cool for other reasons like their cultural significance and really neat stuff like the drawing cut, and how they benefit greatly from being very easy to use.

You're basing your retarded theory on one video where they're not trying to kill eachother? By your logic then the knight duels where guys slam eachother over and over again proves that knights were unskilled warriors.

You know, except for the times they conquered kingdoms in England and Russia.

Man what the fuck are you guys going on about?

How do you expect to hold any sort of territory without foot soldiers? Like seriously.

Do you honestly think armor and air are going to be the only fucking fighters in a modern war? You realize that tech of china, russia, and the USA all have their own counter measures for taking out tanks and air fighters. A chopper isn't going to be able to just sit around mowing down goat fuckers like they do in iraq and afghanistan. They would become high priority targets and get blasted out of the sky within a minute of showing up. Same thing for tanks.

The only possible way armor is effective is with foot soldier support. Abrams and apaches are incredibly fucking expensive and there simply aren't enough of them to fill an entire military force.

The US has around 12,000 aircraft where not all of them are combat. And only 9000 tanks or so. You are looking at only 21,000 pieces of ground armor and air/

A modern war would have tens of millions of soldier combatants.

Do the math you fucking tards.

So would a large rock.

Also I hoped anyone looking for realism in this game know they ain't getting any. Armor might was well be paper dresses in this game.

Is there any game that does armor well? All I can think of is Mount and Blade where plate makes you nearly immune to arrows.
