I knew about the secret before playing the game just from seeing the webms here when people got a hold of the JP earlier released copies. That said I'm fairly sure I would have (and most people for that matter) figured out how to get there. It's not that cryptic at all if you are actually paying attention to your enviroment. Plus if you are playing online there's a 99% chance when you crossed the area with the secret you saw a message with tons if votes saying try gesture. A gesture you didn't have so you'd come back once you get which is not too far ahead.

After Bloodborne's Make Contact, it was pretty obvious. If you haven't played Bloodborne and you're offline so soapstone hints aren't there, I guess it's understandable if you miss Archdragon. For veteran players it's really not that big a deal, though. Like hitting hidden walls.
The only big thing he's missed that made me confused was him not finding the Fair Lady's (+Quelaana's) body or even noticing it at the end of the hall in the Demon Ruins so that he could try to figure out the path to it.

Spoilers everywhere, but that doesn't deter people from going to see big releases. I can't remember the source, but I remember reading a study that suggested that people actually feel more comfortable going to a movie when they know the spoilers. Same thing works for games, I would guess.
