What you call autism is what makes the games run and work as they do, and if they do is because there are even bigger "autists" who not only understand all this very easily because they know the subject very well, but use their knowledge to build all those immaginary worlds, characters and events that makes the game you play everyday....

>>
>>338578169
That's one of the two eliminated - the other is entering the Secret Aquarium, which was accomplished through the same Hazy-Maze Cave PU jump.

However, there's something of note to address. The issue with the 0.5x A Press runs is that their existence means that until a method is found to beat them with no A Presses, it will forever be impossible to have a 0x A Press 100% run. The A button has to be pressed at some point to beat the 0.5x A Press missions, so they're only kind of eliminated from the total tally.
>>
>>338578590
So I will live to see a half-press run of SM64? Have memes gone too far?
>>
>>338578590
Does it count if the button is held after choosing the star or save file, or does Mario actually have to jump at some point?

>>
>>338578772

>>
>>338578671
No. In the context of the entire game, that be impossible. The lowest possible before 0x would be 1x, as the two important stages of pressing A, "Pressing" and "Holding" would both have to be done in the overall run.

However, for an individual Star, you could start with A already pressed, thus being able to get the single Star with only the "Holding" accomplished.

>tl;dr: 0.5x A Press is only possible for individual Stars, not the entire game.
>>
>>338578983
Why don't you hold down the A button before turning on the game?
>>
>>338579086
It still counts as pressing the button in some context since you're doing things you need A pressed down to do

Ocarina has pretty much the same level of effort put into it by speedrun autists, they just don't really publicize it like this. DK64 also has some pretty intense speedrunning autism, among other things they intentionally reduce the framerate by throwing shit which causes them to move so fast they can go through walls. Sonic wont get the same kind of attention because speedrun autists are all nintenyearolds.

In math, equations and notations are there simply because it would take far too long to say in words what the ideas mean. You may think it's confusing, but just imagine how much worse math would be if you had to solve a problem like

Find all numbers such that the following holds: upon squaring the number, subtracting three times the number, and adding two, yields zero.

And, if you think that's ridiculous - well, so did mathematicians in the 1500s, who started coming up with the notation (because mathematicians used to actually write equations like that).

Like I said, I'm only half serious.

As someone who's not good at math and has no reason to be, problems expressed verbally (and slowly reconstructed) are often easier than getting good at notation.

It's mostly a problem when you've got - say - a physics game like KSP and someone throws out something like the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation instead of just saying "The rocket will work better if you have multiple stages instead of just 1. You can calculate this with [rocket equation] but you don't have to bother. Also remember rockets don't go straight up."

You do realize that all the things he talks about are entry-level stuff that programmers need to know when they make games (or anything else) themselves? Just think, maybe for a second (if you can manage that), that there might be people out there who find this stuff interesting (after all, why would a lot of those programmers be doing it in the first place, too)? Do those programmers have "phycohlogical" (sic) problems as well?
>>
>>338582242
Formal math notation *is* terrible though. It's far too unnecessarily ambiguous, is reliant on context in arbitrary ways and there's no actual formal grammar for it.

As a programmer it disgusts me. Even for basic shit like summing over a series it has to be implied in supplementary text how this is done in a given instance.

Math major here. It's just that both notation AND terminology together serve the purpose to be unambiguous. Using notation alone (in a completely unambiguous way, without supplementary text) would be just as cumbersome as not using notation at all. Notation is merely a tool, and isn't meant to include ALL of the ideas.

And I wouldn't claim otherwise, but you can at least recognize that the notation we have now has significant and unnecessary flaws. If I see a symbol used in a way that I haven't seen before, it should be completely clear that this is the case.

It's not the numbers themselves, though, but rather it's the ideas behind them that he cares about. Much in the same way a scientist or mathematician would invest himself in some problem. they act of pressing means to push something in, you push it in, it's FUCKING pressed

>>
>>338586189

You're just thinking of the action of a door being pushed open, rather than the entire sequence of what happens when you push a door

you need to start thinking laterally. 'press' in this case is referring to the entire sequence of functions called over the course of one instance of holding down a button then releasing
>>
>>338586189
in mario 64 the game state in which the a button is pressed in and the state in which it is not are two entirely different things so he denotes them as such

it doesn't have anything to do with whether the button is "fully in" or not, although the states where the button is pressing down or releasing up are considered part of the A press.

like >>338586285 said, don't think of the "A press" as just the period during which the button is pressed down. the "A press" that pannenkoek refers to is the ENTIRE SEQUENCE of events beginning with the button being un-pressed, the player pressing the button in, holding it down for however long, and then releasing it to return to its original un-pressed state.

this is where the logic of the "half A press" comes from. if you press the button down and don't release it, only half of the sequence has completed. and regardless of when you enter a level, your A press count is reset to 0. so, when pannenkoek enters a level with A already held down, he can reap the effects of having done the first half of the A press (the "little kicks", the dive, etc.), and then once he releases it it is considered only half of an A press because it was the only actual movement of the A state that occurred during the level.

From an internal perspective, pressing, holding, and releasing the button are three different states. A game dev could assign either state to do given actions to a button/key in their vidya.

Maybe Mario isn't a good example, let's say you wanted to charge Samus' beam in a Metroid game.

>Press: Fires an uncharged shot, if Samus is not doing another action (like changing beams in Prime) or is moving between areas (in the 2D games)
>Held: Starts charging the beam
>Release: If fully charged after the button is held for a given amount of time, fires a charged beam shot
>If not, fires an uncharged shot

You get what I mean?
