I've heard mixed things. People say the early game is really good, but then it starts to get somewhat boring. Also, the endgame crises seem really forced.

I'm on the fence, too. I really like Distant Worlds, but if there's one thing that DW lacks is good diplomacy. Since Stellaris is a Paradox game, I would think its diplomacy would be slightly better, but I've heard otherwise.

I think I might stick to Distant Worlds and Aurora for now, and pick it up if it's on sale.

>tfw sandwiched between 2 fallen empires
>>
>>338395495
No, not really. Just like every 4x/grand strat game it has some good ideas, but overall the game is a failure.

Combat is perfect but warfare is total garbage. Taking human control out of the combat on the tactical level levels the playing field for AI, but allowing all of your ships to fit in one fleet means that everything is deathball. Why would you split your fleet up and risk easily losing half of it, when you can just roll through at your most powerful. This makes wars incredibly dull as you spend your time running from a powerful fleet or trying to chase one down. Once one battle happens, the war is completely over.

The expansion mechanics are good, but the penalties for expanding are too high to ever want to expand once you're getting 100-200 research. Building colonies makes new technology more expensive than if you hadn't expanded at all, and having frontier stations cost influence means you can really only ever have 4-5 of them. At a certain point you just don't want to do anything.

And thats the biggest problem. You wait so fucking long for everything that most of what you do is just wait and wait and wait for tons and tons of time. At normal speed 10 years should take about a few hours, and terraforming a planet or integrating an empire takes 50-100 years. It's fucking ridiculous

Seems like nobody likes a mediocre joke.

I upgraded my divine mandate recently to the improved version. Currently the most annoying thing I am doing is properly making my planets efficient. I am also worried that I might need to start a cluster of colonies on the complete other side of the galaxy and I won't be able to protect them for a while. Finally, I am in a alliance with one guy and nobody likes us. There is two separate federations that don't like us and they don't like each other.

There is only two spiritualist countries that like me.

Early game is nice when you're still exploring and finding new random events, plus learning how the game works. Things like observing and uplifting pre-space or pre-sentient races are fantastic ideas, and alongside the random events with choices and race creation pretty much the only elements that make Stellaris stand out from Distant Worlds.

After the initial and ultimately short exploration part is over the game starts to get dreary as you find out there's no way to automate constructors or scouts (as opposed to DW), there's almost no random events anymore and like Amplitude's Endless Space, once the borders get set up there's literally nothing to do in the game apart from militaristic expansion, as the domestic politics and diplomacy are so fucking bare-bones it's not even funny. Even if you're playing pacifist xenophiles there's nothing to do but invade unless you just like twiddling your thumbs around while nothing happens. There aren't even alternative victory conditions like proper space 4X, nor opportunities to roleplay like CKII.

Mid- and endgame are spent doing nothing but inflating your ship deathstack and waiting for researches to finish, while very slowly waging war for new planets (due to limits of warscore system and slowness of political assimilation of vassals) and HOPING that a galactic invasion crisis occurs so there's something to actually fucking do.

All the while every single empire in the game is Inferior / Pathetic compared to yours and there's nothing to fucking do due to lack of random events or proper domestic politics.

>>338414864
You can. The game will play itself if you want, although of course it won't do as well as a player. There are AI mods that improve it however.
>>
>>338414864
It's feasible. Be warned though, I would say Distant World's learning curve is higher than even Dwarf Fortress.
>>
>>338410076

Having just finished putting 40 hours into an Ironman game, I can 99% agree with this.

There ARE however plenty of opportunities for flavor thanks to the random events that will crop up during mid and end game. As you blob wider and wider, you'll encounter all the neat little events they have scattered across all the planets that give you cool bonuses like recruiting Titanic Creatures for foot soldiers, unique ship components like the space amoeba drones, or huge productivity bonuses on your planets.

However, they don't amount to much difference at that point, when all you care about is whether your fleet stack is bigger than their fleet stack.

If you look at the Dev Diaries for the 1.1 patch, they admit that they spent all their time on early game and flat-out dropped entire categories for mid- and end-game events, like Colony Development events and events occurring due to Gene Modding your race into sub-species.

I absolutely love the race designer and the early game, but Stellaris right now is mostly the framework for what will probably be my favorite 4x in two years once they've refined it and gotten the DLC out.

I've played hundreds of combined hours of Distant Worlds, MoO2, Gal Civ 2, Endless Space, Sword of the Stars, and Sins of a Solar Empire, and this honestly will be my go-to 4X if and when it gets there.
>>
>>338415282
It's not Aurora 4x or anything.

Distant Worlds is hard to get into, but once you learn to walk moving to running isn't bad
>>
>>338415282
>Be warned though, I would say Distant World's learning curve is higher than even Dwarf Fortress.
I already have a good grasp of the game; just have never tried something like what I posted.

I don't think it's harder to get into than dwarf fortress, as the UI is much more intuitive, and mechanics are explained better.
>>
>>338414864

>How feasible is this?

Completely. You can automate just about everything and let the game play itself.

The only tricky part is getting the AI to properly create fleets that attack and defend in a logical way, because by default they'll fly willy-nilly between the front line and back to your home base without prioritizing threat size.

Also, the AI doesn't make ships that are optimized very well, so it's a good thing for the player to put some focus into.
>>
>>338415496
you can't save a game by adding a bunch of random events, they need to do a lot more than that.
>>
>>338415496
This game might be fine if they add in DW's private sector, more diplomacy, revamp warscore completely and make combat interesting via SPESS TERRAIN or something, but that's going to be years if it does happen
>>
>>338416539

That wasn't what I was implying.

The post I replied to indicated that literally nothing happens after mid-game besides ship battles, which isn't true. Lots of interesting things do happen all the time, but they become inconsequential in contrast to their impact in early-game.

I look forward to..
