No, they don't need to be. If I wanted to play a Mario Kart game I'd play Double Dash or 8, 64 is too clunky by today's standards.

MK64 had some pretty bad handling so for that reason alone F-Zero X is far better, the speed and insanity of the races alone makes it one of the best racing games ever made.

It's definately the weakest F-Zero game graphically.

Well it was still designed around the console's limitations and thanks to that it still looks pretty good. The tracks cover up most of the screen anyways, so it's fine if the backgrounds aren't filled with a bunch of stuff.

I mean, I get that there are going to be some people coming into this thread and acting contrarian about it, but Mario Kart was literally shit up until Double Dash and MKDS. Crash Team Racing was the superior kart racer of it's generation, and F-Zero is just in its own field because its completely unlike either of them.

Don't forget the physics are wonderful. The momentum transfer between cars is awesome. Corkscrewing around on cylinders to get speed is awesome. Tapping the edges to gain a speed boost is awesome. This game is awesome.
I always preferred both Diddy Kong Racing and Lego Racers to mk64 as cart racers. Oh and Crash tournament racing if we include the ps1.
