So.. Was it really that good of a game? Does it deserve that spin-off?
>>
Banjo 1 is really strong until the desert world, at which point the monotony starts to set in. Jak 1 is similar in that regard. It's a good game, though, and Hookah looks fun.
>>
>>338377015
Tooie is better is every way.
>>
>>338377576
Only retards who think Open World is the pinnacle of game design would agree with this.

Tooie is a bloated mess that lacks the strong design sense of the original game.
>>
>>338377269
>until the desert world

Fucking this. I've tried to play through the game several times and every time I get to the desert I just get bored and give up shortly after. I think it's just a really shitty level.
>>
>>338377576
I like Tooie but let's be real anon. Tooie is a convoluted mess.

That ham fisted jab at collectathons in Nuts and Bolts sort of holds true for Tooie. There is too much shit, the stages being interconnected is a neat idea but most of the time you are given no clue as to where a stage connects to another stage. Like in Terrydactyland for example, how the fuck are you supposed to know that Cloud Cuckoo Land is how you obtain that jiggy. And then there is the abilities and power ups on top of abilities and power ups. I like the idea of starting the game with all the abilities you got in the first, but there is just too much shit to manage. The stages in Tooie also aren't as memorable but that is just my personal gripe.

All Banjo Tooie did better than the original was having boss fights.
>>
>>338377813
It's because the level severely restricts your movement and punishes you for minor errors when you're playing with fucking N64 controls. The others up to that point have strong gimmicks to keep the levels segmented (icy slopes, water, etc), but the desert is a real bitch and relies on too much trial and error.

This is why DK64 is such a pain in the ass: it starts dropping stuff like this by the SECOND LEVEL and has all the worst aspects of DKC3 and Tooie.
>>
>>338377015
>>
>>338377015
What spin-off? Grunty's Revenge?
>>
>>338377269
>Jak 1 is similar in that regard
Jak 1 is monotonous from the beginning
>>
>>338379694
It's...okay. It just goes downhill fast near the end, just like Banjo. The final tower in Jak was real fucking good and made me wonder why the rest of the game wasn't that tight, though.

Jak 2 a fucking shit and I'll never understand the praise. If I want GTA I'll play it, and if i want a shitty platformer I'll play Ratchet. Compared to 2, 1's gold.

>>
>>338379401

Jesus, I had no issues with this back when I was 8 years old.
>>
>>338380267
>Being annoying = Hard
No anon, fighting the controls and playing bad minigames is not hard. It's boring and frustrating because you could be spending your time playing something that's actually good. DK 64 falls into the terrible "If you're jumping a lot, it's good platforming" fallacy and has some of the most drawn out, tedious levels ever.
>>
>>338377269
>Banjo 1 is really strong
Desert levels in general are pretty shit.

Angry Aztec in DK64 is also really shit.
>>
>>338379676

>>
I'm nostalgia blinded hard by it, but I think it's a good game, yeah.
>>
I never liked open world platformers. I don't see the fun in roaming around collecting things.
>>
>>338377269
The only real gripe about Gobi Valley is that damned maze puzzle. Talk about trial-and-error, and God forbid you didn't know there were musical notes IN THE MAZE.

The real bitch about Banjo-Kazooie is Rusty Bucket Bay. Fuck that level.
>>
>>338381926
After doing Grunty Industries basically every stage in Banjo Kazooie is a cakewalk.
>>
>>338382146
That's just it, most of them are. Banjo-Kazooie just gets a little wonky with timed puzzles, but other than that, is reasonable to expect a child to be able to clear, with time. Click Clock Wood is fucking nothing.

Grunty fight is pretty rough, though. Shoot eggs into the statues, yeah, like I can do that when she's firing off a million projectiles.

>>

I never played Tooie as a kid. I replayed Banjo about three or four years ago and had a blast, then went straight on to Tooie. The plot seemed engaging but the tone shift was poor, and holy crap the bloating. God. Enemies that respawn, and everything was a pain to get from A to B. Couldn't be fucked. That Mumbo stuff was just annoying as well, contrived and unfun in stark contast to Kazooie's transformations.

You can repeat that again. Grunty was the hardest thing I ever had to deal with as a kid. I can beat her fine as an adult but she definitely requires more focus and coordination. The fact that I'm also better at the game in general as an adult and so enter the fight with a full doubled health bar and so on also helps. He freaked me out as a kid, but I realized you could kill him as an adult. Every time I play it now, I make sure to do just that as soon as possible. Unfortunately, he respawns after a while (respawning enemies in Tooie were just the worst).

I remember that bull in Mumbo's Mountain being invincible. Even though as a kid, I was afraid to fight it for that reason, along with the fact that it was aggressive, it left me curious, making me wonder if there was a way to permanently beat it. It's such an outlier among enemies.

Kazooie is great and I honestly still prefer it to Mario 64. The latter has better physics but BK beats in everything else and positively oozes with character.

Tooie wasn't awful, but the level design wasn't nearly as good. Too many big, empty spaces and not enough to do. Terrydactyland is the worst example of this.
