2016 will be over soon and they still haven't finished the basic tech needed for the game. Not to mention having to populate the universe with interesting content. A. They planned for a much earlier release but as money kept rolling in the scopecreep means they keep adding shit and the game will only be released in an incomplete form once people stop paying for it and they need more money. i.e. incompetent.

Almost all of the single seater ships are flyable at this point. Also the Freelancer (armored trader), Cutlass (Pirate 2-seat fighter that got fucked in development), Retaliator (B-52), Constellation (Millenium Falcon), Starfarer (Fuel freighter).
The game currently has two real flying modes at this point, Arena Commander which is PvP deathmatch, racing, or horde mode; and Crusader which is the vertical slice of their Persistent Universe mode.
Crusader currently has missions you can undertake where you fly to nav beacons and kill NPC pirates, a wanted/bounty system for PvP, some general "fuck around" asteroid belts/derelicts, and an abandoned security station for fucking around with FPS weapons.
Next patch is currently in testing and finally adds persistence between game sessions to Crusader. Currently the only way to earn stuff in game is through earning REC in Arena Commander and spending it on rental equipment. 2.4 will add Alpha UEC that you earn from Crusader missions and can be used to buy stuff.
