Use Trickster
Learn to dodge
Survival is more important than a high combo
Guns are a low priority- most damage comes from melee
DT is a TOOL, not a CRUTCH- learn to use it, not rely on it
Play with Gold Orbs, and if you still suck play on Easy, there's no shame in learning the basics. Also play with a controller, your life will be easier.

Okay, Special Edition has Vergil as a bonus AND is much easier than the original.
You'll be fine, just use a gold orb, though I recommend beating DMC1 and at least trying DMC2.
Just keep at it and you'll get better with practice
I recommend trying out other crazy games besides Devil May Cry as well, such as:

Played 1 way back when. Saw a bit of 2 but didn't actually touch it myself.
Then I played the same handful of online games for 8 years.
Not much, you can start having fun right off. Once you have a few weapons stuff starts getting pretty crazy pretty fast. It's not that you have to get good to have fun, lord knows how long it took me to beat DMD, but the process of getting good is a lot of fun. Watch a few combo videos for inspiration after you get the basics down, usually there are people in the comments who will be asking and explaining how it's done.
Vergil is also pretty simple if you just want to get some basic system mechanics down, but still interesting enough to be pretty fun.

commit to a style. Swordmaster is the most fun. Trickster is for casuals and RG is for later playthroughs. Gunslinger is for idiots.
At around Geryon (mission 12) your style should have reached max level, unlocking all moves.
You are now starting to have fun. But for me personally I need the Beowulf gauntlets(mission 14) to have CUHRAZY amounts of fun.
