It's 2016. I want to play the original Doom. What is my best options? Fenagiling around to get the original to run on my 2016 computer? Emulation? Steam? A re-release? What's the best choice?
Get a Doom source port (ZDoom) and the .wad files from a torrent.
Alternatively, you can buy the re-leases from BFG. Not nearly as well done as the numerous source ports, but will get your nostalgia itched.
Consoles? No idea. Every PC can play Doom now-a-days so don't fuck around with it. I hear the Jaguar version was decent.

Play it on PC.
Snag the main .wad(doom.wad, doom2.wad, etc)from a torrent and download either the Chocolate Doom(for an authentic 1994 experience)or zDoom(If you want a more modable, open-ended source port)source ports.
GZDoom is also a great choice and my personal favorite. It only differs from zDoom in the fact that it has OpenGL rendering and can do room-over-room/use 3d models. It is necessary to run some mods.
Then you just slap the main .wad file in the source port directory and run the executable.
