How? RE4 popularized the over the shoulder TPS and games before Gears of War had jumped on that trend.
If anything it only ruined Epic. The first one was fine but the series stagnated quickly because there was only this and Halo on 360 so they didn't have to do much to sell.
Overall it's a solid 6/10 franchise. Terribly written campaigns though.

Nah, gaming was dead long before GoW. Shit from the N64/PS1 generation killed it, GoW was just more of the same non-game garbage for the New Casual Gaming Generation brought in to boost "gaming" in the mid-90s.
Shit like Mario 64, Half-Life, and Metal Gear Solid were the real causes of the decline and death of gaming. Poor controls, bad camera, story-heavy bullshit, overly linear gameplay, and other bullshit that this garbage brought in while they sold it to new pseudo-gamers that didn't know any better while paying off reviewers to give this garbage glowing, "10/10 Game of the Century" bullshit reviews was the center of it all.

wallbouncing and power weapons are key, just like Unreal
The movement system and instagib gameplay makes casuals give up and quit, that's why Gears is its own thing.

Cliffy B ripped off Kill.Switch by Namco Hometek (2003) which tuned the initial cover-based shooter concept of Project Winback (Koei OmegaForce, 2001) by including blindfire and other cover moves.

It was shit. They completely removed the feeling of fear and isolation that was so strong in the first one. The game is also so ridiculously colorful it completely took me out of the experience.
I mean, I kind of understand what you're saying; the opening scene where everyone's riding on those massive vehicles during Prescott's speech got me pretty hyped up, but the rest of the game is boring. It's not as good as when it was just Marcus and Dom and you were still learning about all the fucked up shit you had to deal with in the post-apocalyptic world.
