>>
I got too scared and stopped playing.
>>

It's probably GOTY 2014 if you play it on Hard or above.
>>

Pretty good
Play it on hard and get ready to get hunted down

it's not only one of the best western horror games in general but the best alien game period.
go play it.

He said "one of the best" western horror games, so he's comparing it to other western horror games. I figured this out because I'm not retarded.

This

I can't play horror games I get too scared and just stand in place. I was one of the first people to play PT but never got to see the monster because too scared
>>
I enjoyed it, the part I got to because I got too scared.

Im a bitch for horror games
>>
>>338317758
I get that they're trying do do an Alien 1 where one Xeno & some android was the big bad guys but why is the Drone so invincible from a story perspective? I don't remember even Warriors or the Queen being that invulnerable.
>>
Im a bit of a pussy so i had to play it with my brother holding me but we both enjoyed it very much. Very faithful to the aliens franchise. CA and Sega did a great job
>>
>>338317758
The Linux version was pretty good, not sure how the PS4 version is.
>>
>>338317758
alien isolation is as close to a perfect alien game as it gets. the game looks and sounds amazing and the atmosphere and overall design are spot on. it shows that the devs were big alien fans and really cared about the game. gameplaywise it can be a bit frustrating because the alien is very unpredictable and kills you with 1 hit. also there are a lot of nasty androids.
>>
Why did polygon/ign/gamespot gate this game?
>>
>>338319502
because whoever wrote those reviews was neither an alien nor a horror fan. also horror is not a mainstream genre.
>>
>>338319502
Says sega on the cover/opening? Dock it down 5 points. Theres an industry wide bias against Sega products and its painfully obvious
>>
>>338319502
ign calling the alien isolation 'mediocre' was the most laughable thing I have ever read. whoever tested the game had no idea what the fuck he was doing.
>>
>>338319697

It's a shit game, and I own the Alien boxed set on VHS.

It's not a good game. It's poorly designed and just plain fucking boring.

The movies had some tension (at least the 2 good ones) but Alien Isolation is literally a waiting game.
>>
like every other modern game it has great aesthetics and no underlying gameplay

its brilliant, solely because the creature and movie designs that inspired it are brilliant
>>
>>338319915

Ignore this faggot, he's retarded. The game is tense as fuck and sitting waiting hiding is pointless because the alien randomly checks hiding spots. It's one of the best horror games in years.

It's really like having an Alien set themed haunted house all to yourself for over 10 hours. Nearly everything feels like a well thought out extension of the visual design of the orignal movie, where it isn't recreating scenes, props, costumes and entire environments 1:1. One of those games that really feels 'cinematic' without compromising on your role in anything.

Play time and how much you like the movie are make or break factors though. There were a couple of points where the game felt like it was outstaying its welcome for the sake of letting you see more of the station, with one last ditch plan or urgent need piling up after another until nothing I was doing felt important, in a game with not enough mechanics to go for over 10 hours. Again, really nice sets but one of the problems that come to mind about Alien as a franchise are titles that for one reason or another didn't need to happen.

>>338319502
Sega hateboner aside, I remember at least one of them directly whinging about it being too hard. The other two probably felt the same way and had the restraint to not put it in their reviews.

what's your favorite horror game?
>>
>>338320070

No, it's a bad game.

It's slow, long and terrible, the game consists of running around pressing buttons and occasionally getting one hit killed by the alien.

It deserves the poor review scores it got.
>>
>>338318961

imagine how superior this game would have been if it started out as a stealth game, but eventually became an actual FPS, with limited ammo and enemies smart enough to run away and flank you
>>
>>338320234
Superman 64. It's so horrible I call it a horror game.
>>
>>338320304
You're just a bitch, the game was good.
>>
>>338320304
are you even an alien fan?
>>
>>338320304
It's more about constant movement without making noise or staying visible. It's not like other survival horror games where it's mostly about resource management and puzzles. In Alien they have items you have to manage, but they're mostly there to get you out of bad situations you got yourself into and to fuck you up even more by alerting the alien where you are or make you stop moving to craft something.
>>
>>338320234
Probably Siren or Siren Bloodcurse. Most horror games tend to be kind of shit, and I wouldn't classify most of them as horror anyways.

>>338320576
I've probably been watching Alien since before you were alive kiddo.

Just because a game is set in an interesting universe that I like doesn't make it a good game. There are shitloads of bad star wars games (and even movies) when the universe is pretty interesting.

See, I was thinking something like this when the apparent sole alien gets ejected with part of the station and the Working Joes go extra berserk. With the balance between fighting back and hiding moved much more towards fighting and a new set of tools to reflect that, CA could have used the layout of Sevastapol to make a System Shock spiritual successor.

I didn't hate the limited capacity to fight back or running and hiding too much, but all I can say for that end of the game (i.e. almost all of the game) is that it's serviceable. Not disagreeable or exceptional in any particular way, just good enough.
>>
>>338320304

It's a really fuckin' good game, OP. It captures the aesthetics, atmosphere, and mood of the Alien movies pretty much perfectly.

The Ayylmao AI is generally pretty darn good to boot. My only complaint is that there's some big pacing issues after the midway point of the game, but it picks up really quick again after that slog.

Give it a go. It's one of my favorites from 2014.
>>
>>338318270
Still implies that japs can make better horror games.
>>
As Alien fan.

It's a love-letter to the franchise.
If you love the films, you'll love it.

Last 3 chapters was aids.
DLC isn't worth it.
>>
>>338321251
Why are you making this into an East vs West dickwaving contest?
>>
It made me watch all the movies.

It's the sequel/love letter to the original Alien, which is what makes it great.
>>
>>338321294
All the DLC is literally only $2 more on the Humble Bundle sale. I say it's definitely worth picking up the complete collection for $15 over $13 for the base game.

Anyone else sad we'll probably never ever get a sequel? Game sold like shit apparently.

How would a sequel work? The game takes place between Alien & Aliens. In fact, we already know that Amanda survives, has kids & dies of cancer at an old age.

My dick got hard as fuck from the aesthetics and general look of the game, fucking hell they nailed that one.

The xenomorph looks sexy as fuck aswell, even Ripley in the DLC is gorgeous.
>>
>>338321527
It sold like 2 million+. But it was on 5 platforms. Took 4 years to make. Had an AAA budget and a decent marketing gig. Sega doesnt want to make very expensive games and only just make a little profit but they also said a sequel is definitely possible still. Maybe in a few years, since they have the engine and can scrap last gen now
>>
The reason it's good horror is that you can avoid 90% of jumpscares if you aren't an idiot, the suspense dies down during some parts and allows you to let your guard down, and you're forced to progress up until you can find a save point (no auto-saving/checkpoints)
>>
>>338321570
oh shit
>>
>>338321859
I wonder what will be the villain & how will they justify the villain's strength. The Terminator's machines, Metroid Fusion's SA-X & all have good reason for being as strong as they are until they're destroyed. I just don't get how this single alien drone is that invulnerable.
>>
>>338318587

Fucking PT would have been the highlight of horror vidya. Why did they cancel it again?
>>
>>338318961

Apparently Vasquez's boot & 9mm can do the trick to a Warrior, abit more than one bullet. A shotgun barely stuns the Drone though.
>>
>>338317758
play on the hardest difficult at night with a headset or surround sound on with a good subwoofer. Easily the best alien game ever made and definitely one of the better horror games to be released in the last few years.
>>
>>338322785
again I believe even her 9mm was shooting non-standard 9mm rounds. its probably just silly fluff added in the games later on but I think thats the reasoning, same thing with Hick's shotgun.
>>
>>338322785
Pellets vs a proper bullet.

Kinda wish they'd let you scare away the alien somewhat but, yeah.
>>
>>338323464
Hopefully so. Otherwise I'd be even more confused as to how the heck a Drone can easily withstand punishment that Warriors die to.
>>
Am I the only one reminded of Metroid Fusion when it was revealed there were multiple Aliens on the space station? Alien heavily inspired Metroid after all.

That's correct, it's why they have to switch to non-explosive side-arms at the first xenomorph encounter as they may trigger an explosion.

Definitely, this game is pretty damn terrifying. Of course, it depends what you find scary but the gameplay is pretty good and the story is mostly gripping enough to keep you engaged for the ride.
>>338323987
Agreed with that it gets repetitive near the end. The 2 hours at the end could have easily been chopped off and made for a better game.

It felt like they could have just stuck the original Film DLC together and added some bits to create a more complete Film-like experience.

Play it immediately.

You know that reveal that there were multiple Aliens? If it weren't for keeping that secret, there could have been multiple Aliens walking about & killing one wouldn't cause anything but temporary relief & less ammo.

Hicks uses a pulse rifle through most of the movie though, and IIRC the only kill his shotty got was when Riply crammed it down a Xeno's mouth.

TO THOSE THAT WANT TO ENJOY IT TO THE FULLEST.

Install these:
This stops the alien from going into seek mode just because you're in the locker, but instead becomes a seeker for no reason on random so he can sometimes just feel the need to crouch to look under a table even though you're not there, instead of becoming a seeker the second you hide which is stupid.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/unpredictable-alien-mod

This ups up the Level of Detail and add higher resolution to the shadows and adds planar reflection to a new level.

Raise LOD to 16 or 32 instead of the measly 2,3 or whatever it is to make the whole level have high graphical models, and not only those that are at arms length.

Definitely. I was a huge fan of the game seeing as it has both competent gameplay (a good mix of hide and seek and being able to fight back vs androids aswell as having tools capable of tricking the alien) and and AMAZING atmosphere that was definitely in line with the film. Issues arose towards the last fourth/fifth of the game when it seemed like you were just backtracking through old areas or doing things you'd already done; like repairing communications arrays, fixing elevators etc. I don't usually want games to be shorter than they are, but in this case I think the game could've benefitted from getting the final missions condensed into one or two.

>>
>>338318961

Aliens and all the recent movies/games like AvP present the aliens as expendable hordes that get gunned down.

The game was just trying to scale things back a bit and make the xenomorph scary again. Don't be surprise if the new Alien movie does the same thing. I love Aliens but it did seriously cuck the xenomorph into being portrayed like a bitch in every movie that came after it.
>>
>>338327423
Does it actually look good? I thought it had very limited VR support.
>>
>>338328562
That's because they are expendable & the Drones most of all. You won't be beating it in a fistfight but 10x24mm armor-piercing explosive rounds put it down quickly.

And it made me call bullshit a few times. At least weapons like the revolver are only small arms. This Drone has more durability than a freaking Queen.

I don't think this game is taking Aliens into account. This is purely an Alien game, based off of the first movie of the universe only when we didn't know about Queens or the hive like nature of the alien. It's just a mysterious killing machine from space where we know little to nothing about it other than the fact that its higher on the food chain than us.
>>
It's great. Probably the best hide and seek horror game made. There's very little to complain about, the most common complaints are arguably not complaints: it being too long and too difficult.
>>
do smoke bombs actually do anything to the alien? I tried using them several times and he just ignores them completely on hard

I think if the smoke bombs explode when the Alien is just wandering around, it'll then crouch down and stare at it for a few solid seconds.

Now I have noticed you can actually hide in smoke and the alien cannot see you. I suppose the point of the smoke bombs is so you can sneak right past it or away from it in plain sight but I never actually tried it out.
>>
>>338333672
I said arguably. I think the game did a pretty good job of switching up the dangers and situations. And really well made games are games you just don't want to end. It wouldn't be any worse if it was 1-2 hours shorter, but I don't think the game's length is a big complaint.
>>
>>338333756
what
jesus fuck, none of the items give you a hint of what functional purpose they could have unless you try them out first. I thought maybe throwing smoke bombs at NPCs made it harder for them to see, but it jack shit.
