There was this game I got at some point I can't remember the name but you were some edgy black creature I thought it was Gex it sounded similar but it wasn't Gex. You had large claws black fur and it was either for ps1 or xbox I can't remember but when I played it something clicked because the starting area was this grave yard with eerie as fuck sounds and it felt like something was wrong with the game. It felt like something was coming to get me the longer I had the game on. I don't know why I felt this but It was the first and last time I felt intense fear from a game.No it wasn't shadow the hedgehog

It seems so stupid to say it, but DK64 was honestly the scariest game I owned as a kid.
Everything terrified me, King K.Rool, the thundery place in Jungle Japes, that dude you had to pay bananas for to enter a new world, swimming underwater (it took me almost 10 years to finally beat that underwater segment with the starfish), the Killer Tomatoes in Fungi Forest, all of Frantic Factory and Creepy Castle...
The list just goes on, I hope I'm not the only one who feared the game as a child. Still loved it though.

I can't think of a single late-90s era "kid's" game that had a higher concentration of creepy/ominous/outright-terrifying shit than star fox 64

I think this was actually the worst/scariest thing about the game.
In BK you atleast had Bottles, Gruntilda's Sister and Cheato. DK64 has your grandma's spooky ghost and a dude in a cage...
The worlds also lack that fun charm of BK, and instead have these more quiet, darker tones.
I guess you could say it's because that the DKC trilogy kind of had that too.
