What makes MGS4 onward so soapy is the increased contrivances that only serve to stir up inter-character drama. Ocelot being Big Boss's buddy and the son of his mentor who is doing everything for the glory of Big Boss, Big Boss being fucking alive to have conversation with Snake for "closure", Otacon and Naomi fucking, Big Boss and Otacon's parents working together, everything about "The Boss's Will," and so on. The series became overwhelmingly self-obsessed. The shift is clear to anyone even slightly observant.
