The backstory of Overwatch was Titan's Story. The whole Omnic Crisis/Elite group of soldiers route was probably the one it was gonna take.
From what I've read they were trying to make this big huge thing, basically Blizz's attempt at a WoW Killer, but even Blizz cannot best the beast it created. It was a clusterfuck and the only fun part of the game at that point was its PVP component which turned into Overwatch.
