There's a reason that Sonic is the only platforming mascot that has ever made Mario fear for his place on the top. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Bubsy Bobcat, Gex, Cool Spot, Jazz Jackrabbit, all of them failed where Sonic (almost) succeeded.

What put Sonic on the map was how the games were put together. If you play the originals you'll find that your jump arc, momentum and direction were all dictated by each tiny contour of the terrain. No jump was exactly alike. Every slope and bump changed how Sonic felt. It was dynamic, fluid and complex where Mario's gameplay, while incredible, relies entirely on flat blocks and tiles.

Sonic's marketing is NOT what made Sonic good. It's what's currently making Sonic shit. Everyone including the official Sonic Twitter goes on and on about "GOTTA GO FAST, LEL, SANIC!" while failing to understand that such a mindset hurts Sonic as a franchise in the long-run. If people only pay attention to the idea of "Sonic goes fast" without understanding why, or how he does so, we get games like Sonic Boom where the only time Sonic goes fast is when the game specifically forces the player to do so, rather than allowing them to make their own damn choices of when and how to "go fast."

I like to say that in Mario you try to beat obstacles and that's it. In sonic beating it is easy, it's figuring out how to breeze past it that's the trick.
Speed ain't all that, it's all about feeling completely unfettered. Like imagine there's a small column in your path with a monitor on the other side. If you're going too slow the only way to get the monitor is to jump on the platform, run over it then jump off. If you go too fast, or jump badly you miss the monitor. But if you time it just right you can avoid the column, hit the monitor and lose as little sense of control as possible. That's what sonic is about.
At least there's The Completionist, right? He seems to be the only E-Celeb remaining who enjoys Sonic for what it is.
