Long story short, it didn't go well
It gets a lot easier when you have a decent champion. Use http://pastebin.com/uWKMF3ck, find a champion you want, hit the right stats/weight/CM, and train it up to around 3000/300 in each stat after it digivolves - this'll be enough to blow through like 40% of the game with ease before it dies of old age. Leave Ultimates until later, they're not worth the effort early on. Wait until you've got a higher Tamer Rank (influences your baby's starting stats) and you've upgraded the gym with the Beetle Land recruits before you grind that far.

Me and my cousin used to play this every day. We didn't have internet back then to lookup a guide or something, so we explored the whole game and we wrote what we had discovered and exchanged info in school. By this method we completed the game 100% and gathered all Digimons in File City.
I really wish I could enjoy games these days and get these experiences again.

I grew up really poor so I had no internet or player's guide (if there even was one), but it was such a shot in the dark trying to get anything but numemon. Then you had to kill that nigger three times in order to try again.

Not true, you needed a certain weight too and the gym burns weight. Early game you have no food to gain weight with.
And the game does not tell you what stats you need. It's literally a shot in the dark. And then you have to trial and error what works and what doesn't. Which is a pain in the ass because of the different variables, one thing off and it's numemon, and trying to figure out what that one thing was took writing shit down.

Speaking of battles: I really wished battles were actually a legitimate way to train. Sadly the stats you gained from it was negligible, so you never had a reason to battle other than for the money.

I tried using the whole team but quickly realized that pumping all my resources into Guilmon was the winning strategy for almost the entire game. There was exactly one random enemy that required a meatshield to beat, so that was the only time I spent effort upgrading my Bearmon to champion status.
