Lance is an incredible weapon. Evade lancing is a lot of fun but even before I got a good set together I was extremely capable of carving through ranks 1-5. Would like to mention the best cat I ever hired, Dean. Exclusively threw bombs with an amazing knack for knocking me out of a monsters crotch.

GL is a lot better in solo play because you don't have to worry about accidentally shelling your teammates.
Also, you have to be more defensive than the lance since you don't have as many hops. Lance is definitely the easier of the two.

In terms of getting the most for the least effort, I would say the Greatsword has always been one of the better weapons in the game. In every game it's always a top shelf weapon. Its moveset is versatile and good against just about every monster. High as fuck burst damage, which will always be viable with this game's mechanics. Lance gets honorable mention

No weapon in this game is straight up bad IMO. However, I would say Gunlance is one of the most situational weapons. It just doesn't do anything that well and, even played at its best, you'll still likely be an annoyance for at least one member of your team. Its melee damage is outclassed by many other weapons and for range you might as well just go gunner. Its just all around mediocre and has never been that good of a weapon.
My favorite weapons are SnS, Bow, and HH, as I tend to favor utility over raw damage output.

Im fucking furious that the greatsword was buffed to be completely fucking devastating. In 1, 2, Freedom Unite, Tri, and 3rd, and Frontier (up to G) it was just a normal fucking weapon.
People didn't complain when you picked it, and people couldn't argue with results.
There were Greatsword gods and greatsword shitters, your skill with the weapon was directly equivalent to the amount of time you spent with it and your effectiveness reflected that. It was also not a very popular choice so some people would be honestly surprised if you were good at it.
with monster hunter 4 a GS is the fucking meme weapon of choice that requires almost no thought. I even pirated my 3ds and played a few hours of fucking monhunt X and the GS is just a brainless fucking scrub tool now. All its downsides have been completely removed and it overshadows everything else in terms of raw fucking power, and even mobility options in X. Fuck my life.

Best is the hunting horn. Good blunt damage and the buffs are nice too, damn useful shit.
Worst is probably a projecticle. I'm going to say heavy bowgun,since that shit is almost impossible in single player and kinda useless in multiplayer as it depends on a lot of factors like the monster not moving around too much and also not targeting you.
Best weapon type: Greatswords.
Worst weapon type: Gunlances.
There's not much to say about greatswords, they have high damage and the hit and run playstyle offers great mobility and frees up the ability to panic dive more often than any other weapon. Best weapon for the solo player.
Now gunlance is an interesting weapon but it can be very disruptive online with players who don't know any better yet. The fixed damage of shells also falls behind at endgame. I think the weapon type could be improved if players were able to change the shell type of the gunlances and each one had some modifier for the raw and element. Like in MH4u the best dragon element gunlance is La Forteresse but it has normal type shells. Full bursting online can easily blow away your teammates and full burst is the optimal use of shells for normal type. So you really have to be careful with it. If you could change it to long or wide type when going online you could have more consistent damage with upward shelling over the normal type with its picking and choosing the best spot and time to drop a full burst.

Gunlance is great though if you're aiming for full part breaks and the like, due towards how shelling and the like works, and like lance, has an easy cut option as well.
Gunlance isn't fast, but I've gotten the most drops, and in turn, a lot of my rares, while using gunlancer sets in turn.

If you're going for part breaks I'd really reccommend using the insect glaive over anything else. You can mount on demand and easily target and part you want with high focused DPS. Especially with something like the Hellruin glaive with its good raw and insane blast for even easier breaks. With bombardier armor skill (5 slot skill) and eating for felyne pyro the Hellruin Glaive "Omen" has 700 blast on top of its already good raw. Triple up adds more attack damage. You can wreck any parts you want. Especially easy for subquest break runs. G rank furious rajang's horns can be broken in one pitfall trap with partbreaker and that set up if you position right and don't accidentally hit its arms with any of your combos.
I like the charge blade and I also enjoy the long sword, dual blades, and insect glaive, but my all time favorite is SnS. It's been my main since the original 3 and the buffs it got in 4 were fantastic. Two mounting strikes up AND DOWN ledges alongside a much needed hard hitting charge move make it even better to play in 4u. It's a shame the overall damage output is rather subpar compared to other weapons, but I think the utility makes up for it.

The SNS in MHX also has new exclusive weapon oils that you can use as temporary buffs. One is an exhaust oil that lets all of your normal slashes do impact damage, you can KO with it. One gives the partbreaker effect. One increases your affinity by a large amount. The last gives mind's eye. The upward shield bash shoryuken art does high KO damage as well. SNS is the new KO king in MHX.

It's got a KO upper cut that does a shitload of KO damage. A spin slash that has about as much I-frames as a roll so you can stick to monsters better and a 'final attack' which is just a special kinda move. Also coatings.

I finally picke dup hammer in MHX and its the best combination of fun and irritating. Its like, just slow enough to not be able to keep up with monsters easily since so mnay of them like to jump and charge across the map or have heads that are hard to reach. I pretty much only ever use Absolute Evade as a gap-closer but I don't think this weapon is for me - I can see why its playerbase loves it though. Of all the weapons it feels the most satisfying to use.

Hammer is fun when you're landing all of your hits just right but that's way easier to do in solo player. In multiplayer it's not as fun because the monster is unpredictable choosing between four targets and you can only land your good head hits when it's recovering from some attack. You can't pull off any preemptive golf swings to smack it as it turns because who knows which way it's going to turn next.

HBG is a fucking powerhouse, it's damn good at what it does but it's very stiff.
LBG can do status' haven't really used it much or been in groups that use it.
Bow can do status, does alright damage. Although a particular set of armor combined with Seregios Bow does just as well as most weapons.
In my opinion, if you're in a group bow is fine to use, but for solo play it can get a bit frustrating.
