Kirby is back and this time he gets to pilot a fun little mecha. (Photo credit: Nintendo)

The latest entry into the long running Kirby series doesn’t disappoint. Bringing mecha to the fray, Kirby: Planet Robobot is a wonderfully crafted platformer with more than a few hints of the brilliant anime Gurren Lagann thrown in for good measure.

Personally, I find hand held games to be some of the best around. When they are done well, they exhibit a focus and discipline that bigger console games lack. This is something the Kirby series has never really lost since its inception on the GameBoy back in 1992. The purity and focus of its design is broadly still present in almost every game since.

In this sense, Kirby: Planet Robobot has come home on the 3DS, as the platform necessitates a greater degree of focus due its technical limitations. The result is something wonderfully crafted and layered in numerous ways.

The first part of the layering occurs in the level design itself. Initially very simple and straightforward, you’re taught how to move between 2D planes, through either jumping onto stars or traveling inside pipes.

While the initial levels offer this as a one-way trip, later levels allow you to move back and forth. What’s more, elements between the planes can interact with one another. The result is that you can set up one section of a level only to go back through it in order to acquire all the items you want.

This is the main drive in each of the levels, picking up stickers and cubes. Stickers adorn your mecha, though more of on the mecha itself later, and cubes are used to unlock the boss at the end of each area.

There are a lot of copy abilities now, maybe too many, but they are all executed very well indeed. (Photo credit: Nintendo)

There are a total of 6 areas with 5 to 6 levels each. The areas are also quite varied and each has their own general theme, from the opening forest to later desert and ocean levels.

Each level is also split into sections and within these are the cubes. Much of the level design is focused around hiding these cubes in various new and in some cases almost fiendish ways. While some of the cubes are in plain sight, many later on are wonderfully obtuse as to their placement and acquisition.

There are three cubes available per level and when each one is acquired, a HUD element on the lower screen. The three icons are also sequential too, so that means you can track what of the level you missed getting a cube.

So while you have the level layering, you then have the copy abilities and various mecha on top of that.

The copy abilities are numerous and if anything a bit excessive. Considering how focused the level design is, the number and variety of copy abilities can feel a little redundant at times. What’s more, each ability has its own set of input commands, adding to this complexity further (thankfully these inputs are all helpfully listed on the pause screen once an ability is equipped).
>>
>>338220878
The next level above the copy abilities is that of the mecha. These are initially captured from enemies and then piloted by Kirby. It is important to clarify here that if you have a copy ability at that point, it is not used by the mecha. However, if you come across an enemy the mecha will scan it and, if compatible, it will unleash a different set of modes.

The mecha itself also bears a strong similarity to Lagann from Gurren Lagann. Like Lagann, it too can copy abilities and also has a fascination with all things drill.

While there are around 25 copy abilities for Kirby, the mecha only has around 10 or so. There is good reason for this though; this is because the copy abilities are strategic and specific. The mecha on the other hand is just a brute force machine that can devastate enemies and most of the level as well.

The mecha is also important in how you interact with the level layers. It can destroy obstacles that bridge the 2D planes or it can control various switches to move parts of the level.
>>
>>338220967
The mecha is a very powerful tool in Kirby’s arsenal, as it can destroy most major level obstacles and make short work of enemies. (Photo credit: Nintendo)

So on the one hand you have these lateral 2D layers for the levels and on the other you have these vertical layers for the abilities and mecha. The combination of all this makes for something refreshingly involved.

The mecha is the big highlight though and I had a lot of fun playing around with it. It also has various modes, such as a jet and a car. There are also special sections in some levels that use these vehicle modes and they reminded me of similar levels in games like Super Mario Land.

This is the main point; Kirby: Planet Robobot is very much a classically designed 2D platforming game that has been built around what the 3DS can do best. Visually it is nicely stylized and very vibrant but all of that is done purely to service what the game can do functionally.

All the layering of the level design and the various copy abilities, as well as the new mecha, are all used in concert with the fact that this is a classic platforming game done very well indeed.

It’s this focus and clarity in the game’s design, even with the excessive number of copy abilities, that is depressingly rare in gaming these days.

Each of the boss fights also utilize each aspect of what the game has to offer too and are joyous with it. The final boss fight is also epic and goes full Gurren Lagann with the mecha side of things, though I don’t want to spoil that in too much detail as it is a lot of fun.

Overall, this is a great platformer done better than most of the competition out there. If you have a 3DS then this is a necessary purchase, as it needs to be part of your gaming library.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

Developer: HAL Laboratory

Publisher: Nintendo

Released: April 28th 2016 (Japan)

Price: 5,076 yen

Score: 9/10

The version reviewed here is the Japanese release. While the language barrier is minimal, the fact that the 3DS is region locked means it’s worth waiting for the Western version. I also completed the game in its entirety for this review.

Disclosure: I bought a copy of this game with my own money.

I don't know if this game does it but a lot of Kirby games change the food out for non-Japan based ones. That's like the closest thing to censorship I can think of for the series. They never seem to go far with Kirby censorship if Zero's bloody eye is in all versions of Dream Land 3 & 64 (though I think it's why the Dream Collection has a E10+ rating).

The only pressing question I have about this game: are the bosses better than in Triple Deluxe?

By this, I mean: do they spend a lot of time hanging around in the background, unable to be hit? Because this made so many bosses in Triple Deluxe just completely fucking awful.

Also, I assume this game has The Arena and The True Arena?
>>
>>338227598
They do still go into the background, but it's not as bad as Triple Deluxe arguably. They seem to be quicker and shorter, at least a little bit, even the returning Triple Deluxe bosses. Pyribbit is back in the Kirby Clash mini-game though sadly. Good thing he's not in either Arena (which yes, both normal and True Arena are in this).
>>
>>338227598
>The only pressing question I have about this game: are the bosses better than in Triple Deluxe?

I never finished TD so I can't give an accurate comparison but some do have those portions but they don't last that long. The only one that's really annoying in my opinion is the DDD Clone Cannon boss or whatever. That one is constantly in the foreground and background. The whole gimmick is that it moves around the circle area you fight so you have to wait for it to get on your plane to hit it.

Yes, it has both of those.

Kumazaki > Sakurai > Shimomura

Kumazaki trilogy is my favorite trilogy. Three perfectly solid games that play like Super Star.

Super Star is my favorite Kirby game of all time, but Adventure and Dreamland are my least favorite kirby games.

Shimomura trilogy is to watered down for my taste, but 64 is good.

It's mostly the music for me. they really nail some of the ost. I also just find the gameplay fun, even if it's just the normal kirby formula. taking an enemy's power and using it for yourself as an "upgrade" of sorts while also having alot of different powers can make things varied. I also love how the bosses contrast so much to kirby sometimes. A cute pink puff ball facing off against the souls of the fallen sound funny to me.

My rule of thumb is that if a site forces you to disable adblocker, it likely isn't worth visiting anyway.

They're always fun, cute & relaxing. They also experiment when it comes to gameplay, especially with the spin-offs. There's a lot of variety also when it comes to the areas in most of the games and while it's nothing huge it can have some darker moments in it like Zero.

And that's to say nothing of the expansion of the lore.

It's actually a reimagining of Float Island

Good point. I was trying to think of what to call it and that works well enough.

Should've jumped on the opportunity before Kirby made her stone fucking dead.

>tfw Kirby spared that whore Susie but melted Sectonia's face
>>
>>338234407
It's float fucking islands, how do you not recognize the second most famous music in the franchise?
>>
>>338234643
Well, like the pause description says, Sectonia lost control of herself and was absorbed by her beauty or whatever so the only option was killing her. Susie didn't lose control of herself and regretted what happened. Haltmann died though.

Interesting since there's already a Float Island remix as well.

Honestly I don't think they ever topped the original. It's so disgustingly catchy.

I personally hear more similarities between it and Aqua Star than I do with Float Islands, though I can easily see where you're coming from as well.

Robobot feels slow and clunky and hurts frames, literally slows the pace of the game

Can't say the music is worse, but I don't note any memorable tracks besides the remixes. That music that plays when you fight sectionia second form perfrctly captures the moment and the BGM vs. Masked/Dark Dedede is the best it's rver been.

Those jew train and sand nigger levels are the worse I've ever played. I like Dedede Tour more that Metaknight Revenge not only because the levels were more of a joy to speed through, but you were rewarded for going towards that place you found that rare item that required you to solve that time consuming puzzle.

There was more polish put into TD. It's blantly apparent that PR was put together in two years, even the minigames are the worst in the series.

See? Not an original note in the whole soundtrack. No wonder Kirby 64 essentially killed Kirby platformers for a decade.

Rock Star is actually the only good song, and it sticks out to the point where I'm convinced it's just a leftover from a better Kirby game.

It's inexplicable inclusion in the Air Ride soundtrack supports this theory, not one other song from the B-team made it in.

I just want an excuse to post some of my more favorite songs from those games.

>Especially considering HAL made Brawl

WHY LIE. WHY. WHERE DID YOU PULL THAT FROM?

Brawl was made by some contract company with Sakurai at the helm. It's no wonder it's the worst Smash by far. HAL would have never let that shit fly.
