Ruby and Sapphire had their eco terrorists fucking with shit they shouldn't, but it was still basically bland.
Then Diamond and Pearl had practically nor story, having some evil looking fag try to remake the fucking UNIVERSE and it's all sort of shrugged off at the end.

What makes plasma distinct was their plan, the fact that they were a secret society and not simply whatever the fuck galactic was or the eco-terrorist teams.
The whole thing with raising a person from the ground up to be master of one of the dragons was interesting. You also had the whole thing with scientists, philosophers and other groups joining and backing the organization in an attempt to make a better world, making them feel a lot more threatening than Cyrus who was basically a cult leader.
Then even the gym leaders get involved because they're that threatening.
It's the same story, but it's got much more shit going on, which is why I think Black and White had the best story.

Gyarados makes more sense with Magikarp's mythical origins. The carp climbing a waterfall and passing through a dragon's gate to become a dragon. But then he rampages and has his status as a dragon stripped from him, which is why Gyarados isn't dragon-type.

Gyarados maintain's Magikarp's triple fin, the whiskers, the open mouth, and segmented body.
Dragonite just has whiskers and looks silly. He also looks like a proper dragon rather than an eastern water dragon like the myth origin.

I've heard that as well, but the reason I find it less likely is because Gyrados is a reference to a story about a carp that jumps over a waterfall and becomes a dragon, which a kind of dragon shaped kite represents (Hence flying type)
Magicarp evolving into dragonite wouldn't make sense because Japanese dragons and western dragons aren't considered the same thing, the Japanese even have a word for European dragons.
On the other hand, the Dragonite line only resembles Gyrados in being blue serpents, none of their phsyical traits otherwise resemble each other.
I think the idea behind the bizzare evolution of Dratini to Dragonite is based on western ideas of sea serpents and Dragons. Also, the basic head structure of the Dragonite line never changes which shows that it's intentional.
