64 was cartridges as that was what Nintendo had been using, and they have advantages over CDs.
Mini CDs with GC was because Nintendo didn't want to pay license for regular DVDs.
DS was a new innovation, both touch screen and dual screen.
Wii was waggle done right for the first time.
WiiU was just Nintendo thinking if they made an iPad they would make loads of dosh.
Nintendo does wierd shit because, A it sets them apart, and B because they normally don't want to pay licenses for little things. It's why they have so much money. Even the WiiU does this, it's disc is proprietary, and spins backwards to avoid any copyright problems. It's also why Nintendo never added blu-ray, they don't want to lose a tiny bit of money on things like that for every unit sold.
Their gimmicks are good, and bad at times. I'm indifferent.
