Units can fall in love, and this is a good thing. Check for when units can have conversations, they can give items or stat boosts. There's some secret items in Chapters 1, 2, and 3 that are pretty helpful but hard to find without a guide/hints.

Only real sequel that changes barely anything mechanicwise is FE7, and even then it adds a good amount of mission objectives. Every other game switches it up with skills, classes, sometimes even changing the game structure(2, 4, 13). Sure the basic stats rarely change and its still turn based, but saying FE barely adds new idea or changes game to game shows that you know jack shit about the series.

If I actually need to play the entire series to notice 40%+ change, it's not changing and thus not worth following. I can play any of the games and say I've played them all because I have. The only reason I would keep playing is if they change things that need to be changed, or if I have actual autism and only want to play pokemon.

wow its like its a series or something. That's like saying every Metal Gear Solid is the same because you stealth in each game.
4 is different because it changes the chapter structure up by having progression based on castles. Each chapter is pretty fucking long. Skills were introduced, so certain characters can't double attack(you don't gain skills on level ups and most aren't based on class). However, inventories are bigger, and certain items give skills. Items can't be traded between units though, as they must be sold and bought at a universal shop. Everyone has their own gold, and an individual arena exists for your units each chapter for them to get cash. Criticals can only be done with a skill or if a weapon has enough kills on it. The level cap is 30, and does not reset when you promote at level 20. There is no deployment cap, you can use your entire army in every chapter. Here's a picture of the home base. Castles can be taken back, so don't let home base be captured.
The biggest difference is the generation system. Love growths through certain talks, being positioned next to each other, and over time. Once units fall in love, they can share their cash between each other and activate critical hits when near(this applies to siblings as well). After the halfway point, the game shifts to the perspective of a younger generation mainly consisting of the children of the 1st generation's playable cast. Their stats/growths/inventories are based on their variable parent(kids are tied to moms) leading to a large amount of replayability. Certain characters with holy bloodlines can pass it down and boost weapon ranks and even allow kids to use special Holy Weapons. If the mom did not fall in love, completely different units join instead(although most of them are weaker).

It's like how Awakening's Dual and Pair Up mechanic needed to be rebalanced for Fates. Genealogy had a lot of ideas but none of them were fully realised or implemented well until later games. Also the maps were dreadfully slow and designed only with mounted units in mind.

Protip, you can set the game to autosave every turn in a seperate slot from your chapter saves. Alternately, you can save at the start of a turn if nobody has taken their turn yet. I suggest starting over with saving.
