People bought it because the previous ones were good and there were more people owning ps3s and xbox360s when gtaV was released compared to when IV was released, and a lot more people play games in general.
Also it's not a bad game. It's just not GTA: San Andreas
It's fun
Fun gameplay aside from the poor cop implementation. Online with friends was also pretty enjoyable, but a total shitshow otherwise.
Story's biggest fault for me was that I never really gave a fuck about anyone in it and the antagonist is practically non-existent.

After not playing for 6 months right after the assault when youre with michael and trevor protects you with the sniper, i've been playing nonstop and really enjoying the game.
As someone mentioned, not entirely sure who the antagonist is. it was obvious in Vice City but idk who or why Im fighting in this game
