A company exists to make money. To do so they create an unwritten pact with consumers. That pact is to release a product at a price both can agree on. For the business this is easy. Profit. For the consumer it hedges heavily on perception. A $15 iPhone sells for $600+ because consumers have agreed mentally that the benefits of owning one are worth that price. It goes beyond money to us though. We unconsciously deliberate things like how many hours we have to work to buy it, how long it lasts, looks, quality, etc.
When something goes on sale it is usually still at a profit, just reduced. I'm not going to get into economies of scale but basically the hope is not to drive profits at the samelevel but to increase them by selling a lot more.
Then you have inventory. Just sitting on product that doesn't sell loses money. You are paying for the warehouse, server space, whatever. For digital keys it's complex but there is money lost when you don't sell out. So companies cut prices, sometimes selling at a loss, to reduce inventory. If you spend $50 a month storing and sell at a $10 loss, you're losing $10, not $50. Waaaay more complicated than that but go with it.
And at the end of the day, pirating loses money for the company. Not having a physical product doesn't matter. If you steal internet use, it costs the ISP. If you made your own sandwich at a restaurant, it costs them money (by having a cook paid that isn't working).
Pirating games means the manhours put in to create the game are not reimbursed equally. Since you can't raise the price, it gets passed on to others. Stores holding copies, publishers, and so on.
Pirate if you want but somebody will always pay and it is always the lowest level. Pirating in the long run fucks teenagers working at Gamestop more than say EA or Activision.
