I like the theory that Doomguy went to hell in Doom 1, 2, and 64 then stayed there for millennia stomping a mud hole in demons asses until they locked him in the coffin. You cannot kill doomguy, you can only hope to contain him.

Another theory points to him being a member of the Night Sentinels or something, it was tropey played-out bullshit that doesn't sound as cool
