Is it possible, that the DOOM games are all in continuity? At least the main entrys of the series.
DOOM 1 and 2, Doomguy fights back the forces of hell.
DOOM 64, the Doomguy stays in hell to make sure, no demon ever escapes.
Then i read this in a commentary:
"in the last level of Doom 3, there's a room called "Chamber of the Hero" where there's a large coffin containing the remains of the first Doomguy. There's even a video-log mentioning him "banishing the invading horde forever.""
Can someone confirm this? I really can't remember seeing this in DOOM 3.
DOOM 2016, we saw he got captured and locked into a sarcophagus by the demons, that makes doom 3 possible, the demons escaped again.
After that, the UAC starting to us the enrgy from the hellportals and call it Argent energy.
DOOM 2016 happens.
In my eyes, that makes every DOOM game canon.

What we do know of 2016's doomguy is that he's essentially, in the demon's eyes, a demigod who cannot be killed, and they had to drop a massive demonic temple on him in order to seal him in a the sarcophagus and then put "DO NOT OPEN OR WE ARE ALL FUCKED" on it, then Doom 2016's timeline UAC found it and opened it.

The guy from DOOM 3 is a different person, he even survives DOOM 3. But at the time DOOM 3 happens, the original Doomguy is already locked up in hell.
So did the demons just like not try hard in Doom 3. They only sent small waves to attack.

Doom 4 is actually kinda cool that way though.
There is very clearly a serious story going on in that game, but it's all in the periphery and Doomguy doesn't give a fuck. He actually encounters a Bioshock-esque audiolog very early in the game and tosses it away while it's still playing. The attitude this game has towards story is great, but it's still kinda fun to try and piece the story together
