I think it was good, but for different reasons.
Like, I played New Vegas again recently after finishing up Fallout 4.
Main thing I noticed is that I was way more interested in exploration in 4 and story in New Vegas.
Like, every time I got to a new location in 4, I instantly wanted to explore it, and was even upset when a whiny settlement pulled me from a new discovery. I wanted to look for junk and see what kind of new corpses/places I'd find.
But in New Vegas, I just stuck to the areas I knew had quests. There was no reason to go digging around really. Only time I ever fought ghouls was during Come Fly with Me.
New Vegas felt a lot fuller though. There were more factions and a lot more quests and interactions between them. In 4, it's just "support these guys, do chores, take out the other factions bases".
Those were fun missions, sure, but they didn't have the same depth as playing Wild Card in New Vegas and trying to keep on everyone's good side with a variety of quests.

Not really, FO4 has plenty of open houses to explore.
NV only has a 2-3 houses in each town to explore the rest are boarded up, most of the shops are boarded up unless you have mods.
FO4 definitely has more to explore, it's just it's not really worth exploring, it's all just boring everyday city shit - the parts that a are unique and exciting are fewer and further between than NV.

Companions in survival mode are the biggest chore.
The only thing for them is to tell to stay still while you explore an area - otherwise you'll half way up the fire escape of a building when suddenly your companion who apparently can't climb a fucking staircase has fallen 5 storeys and now requires you to stimpack them.
This happened 4 times until I told Preston to fuck right off back to sanctuary.

Nah, that one's shit and has bad texture work. It's also free-hand-modeled and doesn't look as good. I use the NCR Ranger Veteran Armor.
The armor upgrades for it fucking blow ass though. It's just a bunch of shit that makes you ridiculously OP but heavy as a fucking rock. Might just drop it since it's way too heavy for Survival.

There's a couple side missions, you can bring him to talk to DiMA, and you can bring him to a secret medical facility under the Vim! Pop Factory and you can use him to pop open a door and get December's Child. Not really worth it IMHO unless you're really hurting for weight. Even then I would suggest using old reliable.
