Well there's plenty of regular items to be found and key/puzzle items can't be wasted.
The only items I can imagine someone not knowing what they do is the Dragonskin Bracers and Krater of Might, which give Armor and full mana respectively.

I liked the first hub a lot had a real sense of adventure, loved how you had to find a spade to dig up a hole to get a key to open a door etc. but after that it just becomes collect the '4 orbs of anubis!!' the combat was also very weak a real downgrade from hexen.
