My guess is that:
1. Nintendo sees no reason for them to develop a game for Sonic when Mario can be by himself just fine
2. There is no way Nintendo would trust Sega with making a Mario platformer
The fun is in making weird shaped characters do gymnastics anyway.

Mario was actually planned to be a nintendo exclusive guest character in Sonic and Sega all Stars racing on the Wii. But was decided against as to not cause "cross contamination" between this and the mario and sonic series.
