1. Fans who already own the game go see the movie
2. Now that they have a code, and Warcraft is on their minds, fans who saw the movies will give their friends the code while also resubscribing themselves to play with their friends
3. Since there are 2 months between the movie and Legion, there is ample time for players to level up together and get hyped for the new expansion
4. Legion comes out, massive subscriber increase between movie release date and expansion release date. Blizzard publicizes their subscriber count again, as if to say, "See, everything is alright."

I have 900k made mostly through garrisons over the course of like 5 months logging in every day for ~30minutes to do all the gold garrison missions I get across 11 characters.
It takes time to ramp up your garrison though, it took time to get maxed out 25 followers with all treasurehunter. It's too late for that now.
I don't really like garrisons but I'd be throwing away free gold if I didn't do it.
That aside I don't buy WoW tokens because my time is more valuable to me than that.
$15 is nothing for a game if I spend at least a few hours out of the month on it.
