Why is Yhorm's face normal ?
>>
He's a different kind of giant than the ones in ds2
>>
>>338062732
Looks pretty damn hollow to me.
>>
He's a giant in the same way Vendrick and Super Ornstein are giants. Just really powerful with a lot of souls.
>>
He's a greatwood a hybrid between the giants of Ds1 and the Tree giants of Ds2
>>
>>338063149
I can't even call this a headcanon, it's literal fan fiction.
>>
because he's not hollow and has just risen as a lord of cinder by the awakening bell

the giants in ds2 are hollowed

the throne of want is effectively the kiln, so when vendrick stole it, he reduced the giants in ds2 to hollowing, falling to the abyss

to combat this, yhorm, a descendant of the dark souls 2 giants and his people he ruled over attempted to create flame with the abyss, the profaned flame

Karla, who is related to zullie and alva, was the instigator for the horrific events at profane capital, she knows how to use dark pyromancies, and andre explicitly describes the profane coal as having the abyss in it

alva, is looking for the spurned in dark souls 3, karla's ashes describe her as the "spurned child of the abyss", in addition one of her spells, dark edge, describes it being transferred from mother to daughter, therefore she might be zullie and alva's daughter

Karla herself is being locked in a jail cell by the last remaining vestiges of the profane capital, the aristocratic jailers, 8 of them guardian over her, seems fairly excessive.

So why?

Because she fucked it all up

Yhorm himself, is not hollowed because he is a lord of cinder as has recently risen like the player, he is related to the giants in dark souls 2 as the message in his room describes "only a storm can fell a greatwood, the dark souls 2 giants grow trees when they die, the londor pilgrims and pontiff sulayvahn grow tree branches as an effect of the abyss, and the dark souls 2 giants are seeking for the kiln, while hollowing and falling to the abyss therefore die and turn into giant trees

Yhorm's grave in dark souls 3, near iudex gundyr has a giant tree growing out of it.
>>
>>338063259
The second part is yeah but there's a fucking dev message that says "Only a storm can fell a greatwood" so that's his technical race
>>

>>
>>338062732
Having storm ruler in the boss room was fucking retarded. It should have been hidden somewhere in the area and require exploring.
>>
>>338064274
This
>>
>>338064274
DS3 is just a fanservice victory lap game for the SoulsBorne franchise. They wanted you to use the Stormruler the same way you did in DeS.
>>
>>338064274
I thought it was pretty cool in a lore perspective, he realized he had a blaring weakness and thought that no one should have it but him.
But I have to agree, I actually knew about the Storm Ruler beforehand without knowing where it actually was, explored the entire area and thought it was in a completely different area, gotta say I was a little disappointed when I found out it was right there.
>>
>>338064274
Profaned capital was so small and they had already run out of ideas.
>>
>>338064274
The arena should've just been bigger like Ancient Wyvern's boss fight. Maybe the Storm Ruler could've been enshrined somewhere and not just sitting on the fucking ground at his feet.
>>
>>338064274
Better yet, the fight shouldn't have required the Stormruler at all. Yhorm could have had a normal amount of health, but could still obtain and use a Stormruler under some circumstances and deal greater than average damage.
>>
>>338064547
For a capital, it was very small. Profaned villa at best

To be honest, the profane capital itself seems to be somewhat rushed.

If you actually consider the geography, it's around about the only area in the game that doesn't make sense because of the giant crevice, which at certain angles shows a similar light to irithyll.

Although the area directly above it isn't directly explored by the player, being around about inbetween undead settlement and catacombs of carthus, there isn't a visible gap from atop anor londo to represent this crevice.

A minor inconsistency, but still annoying nonetheless.

Another area that doesn't match is the irithyll dungeon-distant manor view in smouldering lake.

Although somewhat interestingly, smouldering lake actually comes under irithyll, that small gap isn't represented at irithyll-distant manor, it's covered by rocks.

Probably a result of rushed development, but nonetheless, it's somewhat bothersome.

This is exactly the problem I have with DS3. Fuck. Profaned Capital was so shitty. I was expecting a cool place to explore and a cool boss fight. But no. I get a small area and a shit boss fight with storm ruler again.

Bleed?
>>
>>338064689

>>
He's clearly supposed to be the same kind of Giant as the Giant Lord. Otherwise they wouldn't refer to him explicitly as a giant.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the red eyes are a compromise by From. Who wanted to just give him red eyes, but couldn't make it work without giving him a whole face. The proof being that his skin is pure black, as in might as well be actual darkness. Why they wanted to give him red eyes, who knows?

>>338063898
Humans are the descendants of the furtive pygmy who possessed the Dark Soul, players are those who possess parts of the Dark Soul, hence Dark Souls.

Humans are the living thing to most be feared, even just from gameplay reasons. A phantom invader is a human with the Dark Soul, and they are more of a nuisance than bosses.

Humans scariness and power comes from their ability to die and yet still remain undead and seek souls perpetually.

Besides, there's no frame of reference. The PC has yet to become a giant. One day they will become an entity of higher power. Just look at Manus.

>>338067646
I think power has a kind of trickiness to it, where the amount and potency of souls may make you larger, but the true absolute power is in being like the Furtive Pygmy, in other words, small humans are the most frightening monster in the series, at least to other races humans are the most threatening, hence the whole "everything wants to kill the player character." I don't think its just hostility, but fear. Only humans speak to other humans in these games about fear of dying. In other words, the fear of the PC is illusory; you know you will win eventually.

Yeah, this happened to me. I don't summon for boss fights, but I still like to co-op a lot. Fought him once and was doing no damage along with the host and the host died. Figured there must be some kind of gimmick so I put my sign again and got summoned to a guy who was using Storm Ruler.

I thought I "got" it and had to go find the super secret weapon and had done the areas out of order by accident. So I went back to Sullyvahn and on to Anor Londo (Had gone through Profaned capital first, obviously) finding Anor Lond and half expecting to get the giant killer weapon from the Blacksmith giant. Found him dead, finished up Aldrich and Anor Londo, no super weapon in sight. Confused as fuck and go back to Yohrm and get Onion bro cut scene and shit my britches a bit.

Kinda lame the weapon was sitting right in there the whole time, though. Not a huge fan of that gimmick.

Actually, I think your character might be an actual giant in DaS3. Everything in Anor Londo, the elevator and O&S's room seems smaller than in DaS1.

Reddit boys cracked the purpose of poise. The more poise you have, the less i-frames during rolling you'll lose when hit, and your i-frames will recover quicker.

>Gwnyevere literally took anor londo with her to lothric to marry oceiros

>rosaria is somehow related to gwynevere through her soul giving bountiful sunlight and leonhard running off with her soul to gwynevere's chamber in anor londo

I thought butthole giants in DaS2 were just a necessary last minute solution cause the giants originally had dangerously cheesy Disney level faces which clashed with the overall tone of the game?

From what I heard recently, DaS2 had suffered from massive mismanaged and even changed directors mid-development who salvaged the game from becoming something even worse than it ended up being. Hence the stark contrasts between the base game and the DLCs. Cause the DLCs were all made by the team that took over and did the salvaging.

I blame Vaati and ENB.

Dark Souls never had complicated lore. Just look at enemies and read item descriptions and everything comes together.

Then these cuntfaces came along, realized how utterly buttfuckingly retared videogame players are and monetized lore speculation.

Have you seen some of the shit in the past? Some cuntfart on Youtube actually started analyzing what he thought was a mural in the lost sinner's boss room. As if it was showing anything of value.

It was the edge where the wallpattern repeated.

They could seriously just add a line of text into the tome descriptions. I mean giving books to a fucking blind girl is pretty obvious that she isn't going to be reading them. I didn't make a big deal of it, just something kinda funny I noticed when I picked up a tome for the first time.

Blame Vaati but don't blame ENB.
Epic did his videos because he loved the games. It still shows in how he refused to get DS3 early because he wanted a genuine experience with it. Vaati however has a history of stealing content from others, denying it, refusing to apologize, doesn't see himself as a part of the community and only makes his videos for the money.

Lothric is a magical land where things converge.

because From can't make a realistic world, they just mishmash different things together and say "yep this linear path of locations with the occasional offshoot is definitely realistic"

just assume that Anor Londo is a magical spaceship that landed in Irithyll
>>
>>338080831
I'm sorry anon, but I don't recall Fromsoft ever claiming any of there games are meant to be "realistic".
In fact, I was almost certain they specifically meant for their games to be fantasy.

>>
>>338080831
Realistic world means you have big fields of nothingness, paths leading to points of no interests and locations not relevant at all and generally worlds that are boring to trespass.

Realism is not the non plus ultra. A world that's fun to move around in and that is reasonably connected is though.

I don't want another boring piece of shit like Skyrim. I want more Lordran.
>>
>>338081063
A false idea.
>>
>>338081137
>>338080998
I think you two autists are taking the word "realistic" too literally. I mean realistic as a dark fantasy game.

Dark Souls 1 was a dark fantasy game, and to make an effective dark fantasy world, it can help to make a lot of the locations seem like real places that you could go to. DS1 did this quite well as a lot of the locations within the game are based on real life structures.

One issue with 2's world is that it was thrown together from scraps and it didn't work out too well and seemed like a high fantasy game

and 3 does a very similar thing
granted it makes more sense than 2's world, but it's still this weird mishmash of styles and areas that would make much sense if it was in any other dark fantasy game
>>
>>338081839
that wouldn't make much sense**
>>
>>338081839
DS2's world was perfectly fine.
I think you take more offense with the fact that unlike DS1 and DS3, DS2 had a wider range of environments / atmospheres.
Shrine of Armana with its blue coloring and the singing from the Demon of Song, Drangleic Castle with its quiet halls and dark raining sky, the grey foggy dreams of the Giants, the over grown ruins of the Forest of Lost Giants. It all fits fine for a dark fantasy like Dark Souls.
>>
>>338082225
I was referring to places like no-man's wharf which feels like it should have been before heide's and lost bastille, not in between them with various spatial oddities going on.
And how the lava castle is directly above earthen peak.

But I suppose the ones you mentioned are actually good examples of grounded dark fantasy areas.
>>
>>338082225
My big problem with DS2 was how it didn't make any sense geometrically, with all these areas overlapping each other if you map out everything.
>>
>>338067457
Well, I'm a little shaky on the distinction between undead and hollows (since the player character goes hollow in the games, right?), so presumably we can compare them to the Abyss Watchers if my presumption is correct

>>338082225
You made me just realize how bland Dark Souls 3's world actually is. Sure the connections between the areas are cool, but each place is just a mix of orange, blue, and grey. Especially after the later half of the game after the dark sun rises.

It's like they used Road of Sacrifice for all the quotas involving areas that weren't castle towns or cathedrals. Damn I miss the colors that DaS2 had.

Is SotFS worth it?
>>
>>338082937
I think the idea was that, unlike DaS where everything was relatively close to each other and happening in one small area, 2 was supposed to take place over the entire continent that Drangleic was situated on. It's why that tunnel to Drangleic Castle is only 100 meters/yards long, but you can see it vaguely in the distance right before you go in. Everything doesn't geographically make sense like in the first game because they were trying to go for a much grander scale than Dark Souls did, so instead they opted not to worry about it. Though nothing can really excuse Iron Keep playing neighbor to Nimbus Land, but it's something that I really can't say particularly bothers me. Though it does make it kind of annoying to try and gauge where you are without running back to the giant map in the Majula house basement every time you kill a boss.
>>
>>338062732
because DS2 wasnt cannon
>>
>>338083391
>Is SotFS worth it?
Its definitely harder than vanilla, but I'd definitely recommend it if you feel like checking out DS2 again.
I only play on console and Scholar for PS4 has an amazing framerate.
And DS3 will probably get better with DLC like DS2 did.
>>
>>338081839
It's why I said, a world that's fun to move around in as is reasonably connected is what you want.

Lordran from DaS1 did this best. It's by no means a particularly realistic world but it was cohesive. Cohesive meaning you didn't require warping to go to most places. You could traverse nearly all of it by foot. It's coherent. Tangible if you will. Interconnectivity is not requires but a super huge plus.

And it's exciting to move around it because it offered a lot of varied locations and you had no idea where you might end up next (on your first playthrough naturally).

You see these two points are what makes a good world.

And yes, DaS2 was very weak with that. As you said it felt put together without much though. The old sky-volcano debate comes to mind.
>>
>>338083391
If you already have DS2 with all dlc, then nope.
And remember that areas in 2 aren't exactly well connected, rubble at shrine of winter etc.
>>
>>338083391
>Damn I miss the colors that DaS2 had.

I disliked how ugly DaS2 was. Not necessarily graphically, but the game looked rough and washed out and gritty in the worst sense.
>>
>>338064904
What do you mean starting height?

Your height never changes.
>>
>>338073765
I think there are two different races of giants. The ones in 1 are like legit godly giants, the ones in 2 are tree-giants and came about as the world progressively got more fucked.

You can see it a lot in 3, things are reverting to how they were before the first flame. Hollows growing into trees, the pilgrims erupting into the butterflies which look like skeletal frames of dragons or something, some dark-infested beings bursting out into snakes which could maybe be the precursors to new primordial serpents. everything is falling apart in preparation of starting again.
>>
Anyone else really annoyed by the camera in this game?

Its like the camera sits too close to your character and most of the time all you see is a giant monster ass when you're moving about so you can't see shit.

This.

There's so many bits in 2 which don't make sense and it's really immersion breaking.

The way that Forest of the fallen giants seems to literally be under majula

The way that drangleic castle changes angular position in the skybox when you go through a ten feet tunnel

The way that dragon aerie/shrine's huge pillars aren't seen anywhere

The way that the route to no man's wharf goes underneath and to the right of heide's tower despite being in a cave that go's out to see

The way that huntsman's copse is in literally tiny non existant gap between the cliffs to the right of majula and majula

Somehwhat famously, the way that earthen peek and iron keep "connect".

The way that things betwixt makes literally no sense at all

The unreliable skyboxes

LISTEN

Giants are like Ents. They're tree-creatures, and as they get older, they get more and more and more tree-ish. They start off looking pretty god damn human, but as they age, they grow taller, stiffer. Their skin hardens into Greatwood, and their heads are engulfed by the growing tree trunk of their torso -- eventually becoming little more than a shallow hole in their heads. Death completes the transformation, and they remain forever as Giant Trees.

Yhorm, and the giants from ToTG, were young giants. The giants in DaS2 were old as fuck.

Search your feelings, /v/, you know this to be true.
>>
>>338084473
The distances between areas aren't accurate.

Proof is as simple as looking out into the sea in Majula where you can see Heide's Tower (you can also see the majula monument from Heide's) and the castle wall where you fight The Pursuer.

They could have added a 5 second cutscene where your character walks down a long hallway or forest path to illustrate that there's a long stretch between the areas but didnt bother.

Because they come up with a broad generic name for things, but it doesn't mean that everything under that name fits into the same species. The people in Drangleic probably only ever encountered that one kind of giant, so they called them "Giants". Meanwhile, in Lordran/Lothric, they mostly encountered another kind of giant so they just called them "Giants."

Like how the Bed of Chaos is described to be the mother of all demons, but then you have things like the Bat-wing Demons, the Covetous Demon, the Smelter Demon, Demon of Song, etc. who don't fit into this definition. Chaos Flame demons are just one kind of creature, but they just give them the generic title of "demons."

The darksign has a correlation with hollowing/flames going

Notably, the pilgrims of londor come from a literal city of hollows in the abyss

the Darksign is an indicator that the Dark has overwhelmed the influence of light. It appears on the bodies of Undead, branding them, when the dark of their Humanity overwhelms the influence of Death (a construction of the age of fire, and of light) in them.

the flame is about to fade, and Darkness is snuffing out the very sun itself.
