Type in the gamertag you want there. If it's not found, then it's either available or an Xbox original account.
I suggest taking a look at the single letter ones (The Xbox Gamertag system allows for single-character names, but a lot are taken by the original Xbox team), if you wanna be a cool dude. Other than that, there's a fuckton of names that have been taken since the Original Xbox days that are going to be available. If I didn't already have my best name, I'd be in on this frenzy.

My personal favorite was a guy who got banned for modding his avatar's skin to be smurf blue, so he had to post on his friend's account to appeal the ban.
His friend's account was clearly displaying his modded avatar as his forum avatar, so they banned him too.
