no, there are lots of ways to get to vegas without going south. i figured out one way to do that on my very first playthrough. and you can go off the road anytime you want and explore the miscellaneous locations.

I loved and played the shit out of every fallout game except tactics and 4 which I just thought were fun games. Must feel bad to be unable to extract maximum joy from the series. That being said, it's a bit sad that I can't think of a nintendo game to add to the list.
I like that New Vegas feels dangerous. You can stumble into some shit that you just aren't ready for. That never happens in Fallout 3.

It's got a really good way of balancing that stuff too. Obviously you get prevented from dashing straight to Vegas by the Deathclaws and Cazadores, but even just off the proper path, you're still going to find caves and shit that you are woefully unprepared for. It creates this situation where you need to prepare to go exploring a new location because you don't know what's in there and whether or not you can survive it.

What the fuck is wrong with your list? Those are some enjoyable games, but they were hardly generation defining. Even Halo 3 was not a significant step up from Halo 2 and saw the series replaced as the staple FPS games by Call of Duty.
