Those pity ports like Valkyria Chronicles were actually huge jokes at your expense, and they're probably in stiches reading "we want the worst Sonic games on PC! I think Touhou might of been good for the genre. It's not like danmaku games do a good job of attracting people who aren't already danmaku fans to their games. They end up being pretty niche and nearly unheard of. Plus they're pretty intimidating and most people don't wanna play them, same as Touhou.
I know a lot of Touhou fans don't even play the games but it's helped the genre gain more attention than it wouldn't of got otherwise at least. It helps keep the genre alive.

Touhou had it right. It wasn't just about bullet spamming the entire screen, it was about making patterns and finding how to seamlessly flow through them. Plus it had that little bar so you could see yourself and the boss through the thick bullet streams.
I've played a couple of bullet hells and I feel like it's easy to fall for the "there are bullets everywhere so the game is good" meme.
