They have also openly stated that they actually looked at the games and played them, Fassbender did it to get a feel of movement for his character. He's also a producer for the movie because it's a passion project for him.

I would not go so far, but it is really good, and the story was enjoyable while not really significant, if anything it is adaptable.
Ezio traveling to Constantinople, having your typical Universal Studios like fights with stuntmen, he mentions his previous adventures and training in form of dialogue, and flashbacks take us to Altair and Exposition. The movie ends revealing that it is all playing inside the head of Ezio successor, Desmond who is not named yet, it just ends like Vanilla Sky showing there is much more to the story as TWEEST.
Then again that might sound convoluted, and people though BvsS had too much plot.
