Well what the fuck, its not even bad.

Can you explain without meming how this is so much worse than the first?

No seriously, I don't see it.
>>
People got mad it did the final fantasy thing and drastically rebooted the universe with the new installment. These are the same people who are lapping up the fan-service in DaS3.
>>
The Firelink place is livelier and more interactive, you can respec your character, the environments are something other than "abandoned castle, forest, swamp, cave repeat".

Is it something about the difficulty? Is it because it's easier?
>>
>>337959686

>fan-service
>in a direct sequel

what
>>
>>337959686
Isn't the whole point of Souls that every installment is supposed to essentially be a reboot?
>>
>>337959428
People only say it is worse because they either have shit taste or because that is their opinion. Don't listen to them, OP. Just play...
>>
>>337959686
Yeah because recurring characters in an apparently rebooted universe isn't the definition of fan service right?

Holy shit you Dark Souls 2 fags have zero self awareness whatsoever.
>>
>>337959428

Nothing, its the best in the series. Soulsfans are the worst possible faggots who just want dark souls over and over again. Das2 was the one to actually try out new things and everyone shat on it because it wasn't dark souls 1.

Das2>Das>Das3>Des (haven't played bloodporn)

And now some faggot will come spewing memes like "m-muh level design earthen peak elevator shit game"
>>
>>337959895
Maybe it's nostalgia goggling. I personally think that the original Pokemon Silver is one of the best in the series, even more than Soul Silver, but everyone says I'm blinded by nostalgia. Maybe I am. Maybe Souls players are too.

I heard DeS had the best story, is this true?

>bad level design isn't valid criticism now

when you try to demonize the criticism of an integral part of what makes a game good it becomes obvious that you're reaching for things to make the game not seem like shit
>>
>>337960038
If you were in a comic book you'd be Super Mad.
>>
>>337960207
Demon Souls has a much of a story as all other games as in literally nothing
It's basically "oh you are the chosen one trapped in this place and must kill the big bad demon to save the world"
>>
I think it's the worst of the five games because I enjoyed playing it the least. There are plenty of other reasons I could criticize it, but at the end of the day that's really all that matters.
>>
>>337960386
>I have no counter argument so I'll just call you mad.

You're not helping your case.
>>
>>337960243

To me Das1 was brilliant because of a lot of things, but level design was not the most important one of them. And Das 2 has much more varied locales than Das3 for example.
>>
>>337960445
Gameplay is vastly superior to Dark Souls 3.
Even if the areas are smaller they are at least far more varied
>>
I can tell you why I like it less. The boss fights weren't very interesting, and the game had a habit of making you face multiple bosses at once instead of giving one boss a varied moveset. Most of the time it seemed like they just threw it together regardless of whether or not it was an interesting and well designed encounter.

The level design was flat too. Both figuratively and literally. Scaling, and descending is always more interesting than trekking across an open area. The care to the level design is also reflected in the world map itself. Areas overlap and intersect others geographically, so the world doesn't make sense.

That's me anyway.
>>
>>337960564
So good level design isn't important for you to enjoy a game.

Really helps me understand what kind of people enjoy this game actually, thanks.
>>
>>337960243
Not that anon but my think about DS fans is they say so much about how great the level design was but the variety of the levels was trash. Yeah, the pacing of the levels were done well but Undead Burg-Undead Parish-Depths-Darkroot-Blighttown was such a slog of unpleasant environments. The biggest variance came with Sen's Fortress-Anor Londo thankfully but before that the environments were terribly boring, albeit well designed.
>>
World map lost its cohesiveness and consistent tone. A big big part of the souls series is shortcuts, big sprawling levels, and a feeling that the world makes sense as you go through it. DSII didn't have that for me, and it was hard to feel motivated to explore the world.

I haven't played the third but I've played DeS through DaSII and felt like Dark Souls II had the least identity out of the three.
>>
Is it time for /v/ to apologize?
>>
1. Lame and/or lazy bossfights
2. Boring level design
3. This game just drags on for far too long.
>>
>>337960984
>A big big part of the souls series is shortcuts, big sprawling levels, and a feeling that the world makes sense as you go through it.

I'm constantly surprised how this seems to be THE most important aspect of souls games to people, and it explains why people like you consider das2 so bad.

I never gave a shit about the firelink shortcut or blighttown or whatever. I play souls because of the amazing varied gameplay with different weapons, fantastic locales and rewarding fights.

>>337961183
>>337960720

What DS bossfights were so amazing as to dampen DS2's experience. O&S goes without saying and personally I liked the Spider Woman, but other than that what fights were so great?

Capra Demon sucked
Gaping Dragon was repetitive
Sif was great
Seath was underwhelming
Gargoyles were ok but a pain
Iron Golem was underwhelming
Four Kings was super underwhelming and possibly the most disappointing of all based on what I expected versus what I got.
>>
>Dark Souls 2 apologists
While it was good for trying to be innovative and had lots of experimental/new ideas, some of them were questionable or shitty in quality.

The good:
Covenants
Invasion mechanics
Poise system
NG+ changes
Effegy system
Looking Glass Knight > Old Monk
Powerstancing
Gimmick weapons/builds being somewhat more viable/creative
Lots of cosmetic armor options
Hollowing being gradual
More fleshed out magic system, Pyromancy/Hex split
Mejula tops Firelink Shrine (DaS) and returns to having a leveling system via Maiden

The bad:
Soul memory is fucking retarded
Lack of full orbs, reliance on cracked eye orbs
Bland/boring npcs, only one or two good questlines arguably
Ring of sacrifice repairable
Level design neutered
Weapon degration rates (especially on PC)
Too much healing items
Laughably bad balancing issues
Horrible enemy placement
Boring/awful bosses with few exceptions
Having ANOTHER version of the game that SPLIT the servers even more that wasn't even a full expected improvement of the original DaS2
A stat being tied to i-frames on rolls is utterly retarded

The ugly:
Art style is a step back
Lighting got neutered and never made a come-back
Beta features were removed (Light/Strong spells, manual aim for magic, etc.)
PC port was delayed by a month at release for no apparent reason
The mask in the trailer compared to what we got
>>
I'm not finished with my playthrough yet (currently in the giant memories) but I don't like it as much as the first one

the movement feels more floaty
a lot of areas are more tedious than anything else, like the area with all the poison spitting statues
the bosses are mostly shit. very few were actually challenging and some, like the looking glass knight, were just laughably easy. I don't even remember most of their names while I remember every single boss from DS1 (only played that game once)

still like it though
>>
>>337961564
This is probably true. It also probably explains why there are some people who compare the game to Diablo while others think it has more in common with castlevania both new and old, and metroid
>>
oh and my OCD doesn't like the human effigies because I'm just hoarding them, leading me to playing the entire game at 75% health with that one ring
>>
>>337961908
>the movement feels more floaty

I hate this so much

They "fixed" it in dark souls 3 but the game is literally faster than bloodborne so you don't really feel the weight there either
>>
Every time I've tried to make a thread about DaS2 I never get any replies.

Its the only Dark Souls game I havent beaten yet. I loved the first and third games but I feel like there is a lot of bullshit in the second game I dont want to bother with.

Is it worth buying now for a play through?
>>
>>337962475
Bruh, it's hella cheap. Why not?
>>
>>337961786
>Looking Glass Knight > Old Monk
This is objectively correct if only because in the event the game fails to find a player than you still have an actual boss with the looking glass knight, whereas the NPC old monk is a complete joke.
>>
>>337961786
>Weapon degration rates (especially on PC)
>Too much healing items

It's weird how they introduced infinite healing to remove the resource management and limited combat from Dark Souls but then added in weapon degradation which built upon how things worked in Dark Souls. I think the idea with infinite healing was to making moment to moment fights more interesting and challenging (thats why there are so many ganks/ambushes, because you can take damage without it being a big deal unless its lethal). Weapon durability became a relevant resource which added a bit more tension to exploring (especially with low durability weapons) but most of the tension from exploring came from limited healing which they removed.

It's such a mess of a game but it's still better than DaS3.

I have no idea why its hated. I enjoyed it, it added new mechanics while being the same shit. Yeah some of them were poorly used, but it tried. Now you get DaS 3 where its just DaS 1 with "weapon art" and virtually nothing else. I've replayed DaS 1 and 2 many times, while 3 i just traded in cause its fucking pointless after one playthrough.
>>
>>337959428
My only real complaints are poise being useless, which combined with defense being meh, makes armor choices largely pointless, and, most importantly, magic being the worst state its been in in the entire series. It really limits my desire to make new characters when each character is just a slightly different Dex or Str loadout.

Which pretty much kills my drive to make new characters. Once you have run through as strength, and run through as dex, what do you do?

Make some twink?

So thats 3 builds as opposed to the dozen or so I cobbled together in all the other games.
>>
>>337963560
I heard magic was worse in DS3 though. Is that wrong?
>>
>>337963704
Yeah. DS3 takes it even further. With DS2 they started the trend of making that shit useless and DS3 embraced those changes hard. I only managed a single playthrough of DS3, whereas at least I got half a dozen out of DS2 before they nerfed magic to garbage status.
