dark souls 2 was trash as far as lore and story were concerned
and they didn't even ignore it, they just took the best bits and made references to them, and then left the rest of the dumb nonsense by the roadside
To be fair they might not have felt confident that they could make another good dark souls game because of the feedback from dark souls 2, but was pressured into releasing one because fans wanted to experience the universe just one last time.
Even though most of the game was references to the first installment, i still felt like it was a solid end to the series

The reason 2 is so panned is because the base game was vague as fuck, and not DaS1 vague, but like confusing as fuck no answers to anything anywhere vague. It didn't need to reference 1, it just needed to make sense, which it didn't, at least until the DLC came out, but by that time many people had already dismissed 2

Dark Souls 2 is the Fallout 3 of Souls games
Every bit of "lore" in 2 is filler garbage, thats why they barely referenced it. Even if they referenced it, what about it actually matters? Manus shards? Giants memorys? Nothing, absolutely none of it pertains to the main souls storyline established in 1. Thats why it was "ignored" it.
