There was a thread about this 2 days ago I think.
Was talking about how AMD has no endgame graphics chip for the next year, but they still survive due to mid tech focus and deals with consoles, etc. They also have a chip that should prove alright eventually, but Nvidia is dominating many future breakthroughs.

Also most games the last 4 years never fully utilised all cores 'Nvidia holds a bit of the blame' but now this card as the ones before it can just brute force it's way to the top.

Now, we just need games that will make the most of it. Does PC have anything good?
>>

>>337915686
Shitty cooler and power limit that limit OC potential.

>>
>>337915914
AMD's flagship HBM2 GPU is due next year first before Nvidia since AMD secured R&D earlier.

That will push future breakthroughs over Nvidias downsized Maxwell chip AKA Pascal.

It perform better, but nothing impressive.
Around 30% better than 980ti on average, but

>stock clock is 1.6mghz
>barely any overclock headroom
>80c ~ 85c on load

So the rumour that saying it perform worse than 980ti clock per clock is accurate.

Unfortunatly I would of been more sympathetic to AMDs plight if I didn't have a bad history with their cards. Probably due to bad luck, but their shit never lasted more than a year and half for me, with the last time I got one whirring like an apache chopper.

As of now AMD use using the marketing term potential since there hasn't been a stellar product for a while, there's always been a draw for their best selling cards. Noise pollution the biggest grievance for me.

and what makes you think Dx12 will fail?

you do realize both Win7 and Dx11 were meant to REPLACE Vista and Dx10 right?

Win7 and Dx11 were not simply successors, but they are replacement to fix the previous el ebin failure

If anything, Dx13 will only improve on Dx12 and what will that prove?

That Maxwell and Pascal is still shitty? You'll have to wait for the newxt generation of Dx13 cards?

While Polaris would probably age better throughout the years? Handling both Dx12 and Dx13 fine?

That will only add insult to the injury we know as the Gimpworks.

One of the reviews compared an overclocked 1080 to an overclocked 980 Ti and the 980 Ti actually made up ground on it due to having more shaders. Pascal is nothing but Maxwell on a smaller process at higher clocks. Which I guess is fine if the performance is there, but the price they're charging for it is gross.

We have to start somewhere don't we?

Pascal and Polaris are supposed to pioneer the move from Dx11 to Dx12 .

We're much likely to see Dx12 as the mainstream standard than Vulkan, it's more feasible.

Compared to Dx11, we've seen 50% loss of framerates on Vulkan.

we're talking Dx12 improvement, NOT looking back on games released in the past 3 years.

Both Pascal and Polaris promises die shrinkage, 2x the performance over last gen, on 1/2 the power draw, FinFet design, new VRAM chip design and improved API handling, which includes Dx12.

Currently have a 760, thinking about upgrading.

Would a 1070 be more worthwhile than a 1080?
>>
>>337916346
There are people here who have used the same GPU for over 5 years, and can drop $600 on a 1080, which will easily last close to a decade for 1080p gaming.

The price point for the 1080 on release makes it the top value priced card by miles.
>>
>>337919265
I'm incredibly sensitive to stuttering and in many games it's really, really terrible. I had to lock TW3 to 30fps because the stuttering was so bad at 60 on anything but the lowest possible settings.

It's why I'm also getting an i7 since that seems to reduce stuttering in quite a few games.

>>
>>337919438
What's your 970 brand? And did you get any stuttering in DS3?
>>
>>337919425
1070 is far better price/performance. For another 200 dollars the difference will be negligible
>>
>>337918484
It's mostly low level performance stuff. You won't see it really increasing frame-rate if you're already running a game well, but it can be useful in avoiding cpu bottlenecks. So the same max frame-rate, but usually much better minimum frame-rate resulting in a higher average.

That said, cpu bottlenecks are almost always a sign of a poorly made game.
>>
>>337919450
It will be the same situation as getting a 970 over a 980ti. The 980ti is massively a better value buy than a 970, but still very expensive comparatively.
>>
>>337919547
MSI, and only got stuttering in DS3 when it autosaved which I can handle. TW3 and GTAV are the absolute worst examples.
>>

Not really accodring to this chart >>337918293
And this is based on the $599 msrp stated by Nvidia, which I doubt most of their partner would try to follow.
>>
>>337918281

that only proved my point even more

Dx10 failed to deliver what it promised to do, and Dx11 fixed that, and even rought new tech like Tesselation.

Sure we can't tell if Dx12 is going to succeed or fail, but we've already seen massive improvement over the countless demo and released games.

Don't blame Dx12 if the games / devs are at fault.

Don't put the blame on Dx12 if your card is the one at fault.

> muh Dx12 is a meme

1070 is what I'm really interested in. Playing at 1080/60 High/Ultra with a 960, hoping I can transition to 1440p/120hz with a 1070. Have we seen benchmarks for it yet?

I've a HD7850 for at least 4 years now, and it's done nothing but excel at running the games it can run. It chugs on newer stuff but that's to be expected, it was mid-high when I got it towards the end of it's lifespan in the tech industry, but even after gathering dust for months it still works perfectly after booting it up and blowing some dust out. Never suffered heat problems, driver crashes or anything else like that either.
>>

55% of the price for 80% of the performance. Going with the biggest card is always a mediocre investment

not him but in my case I have a 1080p 60hz monitor anyway. basically zero reason to go with the bigger card.
>>
How often do graphics cards come out? I'm using a 7870 and it clearly struggles with the big games. Quantum Break was unplayable even while looking worse than World of Warcraft vanilla on low and 720p.
But considering I don't really play much of those games, I feel like I could wait a dozen or so months
>>
>>337920241
funny, I can say the same for Nvidia. My 970 has always been performing worse than the 290 in non Gameworks games and on top of that I've had loads of issues ranging from coil whine, driver crashes to desktop, and that 3.5GB performance degradation issue.

>>
>>337920241
AMD matches the power of nvidia, but their build quality is utter shit. It's why they sell at a cheaper price. AMD runs hotter and louder, which ultimately results in worse GPU than nvidia equivalents.

How any of these AMD shills can see AMD constantly offering similar power cards at a lower price point, yet AMD never trumps nvidia, and they don't connect the dots that there's more to a GPU than power, is beyond me. They're fucking idiots.
>>

It's still a pretty old card.
Bioshock Infinite couldn't keep up the 60fps on max, and that's not a very intensive game.
GTA V made me do some heavy option tweaking.
Dark Souls III worked perfectly, but of course it will considering it's running with the exact same settings as the PS4

skip 980, 390x, 980ti, fury/x , titan x

get the new 1070 / 1080

the equivalent AMD will only come out earliest October this year or March of next year

you could skip 380 / 390 and just get the new $200 480, which would be close to the 390 or 980

Polaris 470, 480 are mid-end / mainstream card that will come out the same time as the higher end 1070 / 1080
